Hello, I am new to web design and found a site that sells wordpress themes for $30. I am wondering if I purchase the theme do I just start adding posts and content to it like a Blogger site or is there html coding and programming invovled?

I'm very confused as to where to start because I'm planning on switching my Blog to a registered domain using a wordpress theme. How newbie friendly is Wordpress?

Any ideas on what to do first?

Appreciate the help!

  • Installing it is very easy, literally 5 minutes.
    Installing WordPress « WordPress Codex
(BTW, they have support forum, too!)

Adding a theme doesn't require any "knowledge" - except being familiar with the tool's features (aka learn the WP admin panel's links and buttons)

Anything beyond that - customization, tweaking the code etc. requires knowledge and experience.

Friendly note: do NOT buy any theme until you have a running WP site.

P.S. On what platform is your present blog?

  • My present Blog is on the Blogger platform in my sig. So what you're saying is that I should register a domain name and install wordpress on it. Then once its live go and buy the theme to start importing my Blogger blog correct?

I really like the theme that I found as its catered to my niche so I don't think I will be doing any customization. I just was wondering how easy it is to import my current Blog posts and add new ones.

Thanks for the quick and knowledgable response Istvan!
  • Ok so here is the first things you need to do.

    1 - Pick a Domain Name
2 - Sign up for some web hosting
3 - Point your Domain to your web hosting
4 - Install Wordpress on your website via the cpanel and most likely Fantastico
5 - Log into your wordpress
6 - Browse through the free themes and see if there are any you like
    7 - Install a theme.

If you are having trouble with these you can reply here or you can try googling some of these. Hope this has helped.
  • Thanks Bizzoyce this outline will definitely help with my tranisition. Do you guys think that I should switch to a Wordpress site or register a domain and stick with blogger?

One of the main reasons I want to register my blog is because I heard Google can just instantly delete your blog. Secondly I want to sign up for affiliate programs in the near future and realized that without a registered domain most affiliate programs will deny the free-hosted site.
  • All your questions belong to the WordPress support forum, not to the marketing forum.

    As for your move:

(the Codex has every information you'd ever think to ask )
  • Ok thanks for the references
