I am at a crossroads in my life at the moment. It's a really fun opportunity and I love the possibilities. I have been looking into Web Design and I am excited by the aesthetics of it.

Now, I wonder, how much can I expect to make as a Web Designer? (conservatively)

And, approximately how much time will it take for the average person to develop the skills required to make 5k/month?

It depends on many factors - e.g. how many clients will you have, how good will you be, at what price will you be offering your services, etc.

It will also depend on the quality of your service. The better the service that you offer the higher the probability that you will get high earnings from a web designing job.

Are you looking to run your own operation, work in-house somewhere, or do a mixture of both?

Also, what other experience do you have outside of web design? I do web design and SEO work, but I also have a business degree, so I've found that more opportunities exist and I'm able to get different jobs because of my background.

It's safe to say you'll never starve with web design skills, but like the others have said, there are way too many factors that go into determining what your earnings will be. All I can say with certainty is that a skilled, professional designer never hurts for work and that if you are dedicated to continuous education and always getting better that you won't be disappointed with getting into the field. It stays interesting and the opportunities are limitless.

Conservative estimates: midwest U.S. designer with an Associates Degree and intermediary knowledge can make $35-45,000 out of the gate by working for a company doing in-house work. Expect there to be a lot of other stuff you have to do besides web design though. Bachelor's degree is a bit more to start, a computer science or programming background can result in significantly more, but there's a lot more to learn there. Starting your own firm will result in a lot less money in the beginning, but obviously there is chance for a higher return down the line. I would suggest getting a steady job and building your business on the side if that is something you want to do. Having dependable income takes a lot of stress off of your shoulders. Plus, you're basically getting paid to improve your craft so it's a win-win.

It can vary enormously depending on what region you live in. I'm in a regional city in the UK and I charge myself out at £15 per hour, because I'm only recently started out on my own and I'm focussing on small business clients.

Working in London for myself I could easily double that. If I was doing development as well as design then I could probably charge £50/hour.

If you're committed to learning the craft, I'd say you could pick up the skills within 12 months if you work really hard - like spend ALL your time building sites and improving your skills.

agreed! even if you are using a CMS like wordpress or joomla, if the site looks professional and meets the clients needs, should be charging at least in the 1K mark.

I am in the same position of starting out in web design and offering SEO services as well.

From the information I have gathered my friends/family that work in SEO firms and Wordpress site creations make $1,500-3,000 per site and an extra $3,000 per month for SEO services.

The reason they can charge $3,000 per month on SEO services is because the entire firm works on getting your site to the 1st page of Google and increases the ROI (return on investment) for the company 10 fold. If you can create value for a company and show them the results they will employ you. The thing that is hard about starting out is finding clients willing to employ you without any background or evidence that your work can produce profits for them.

I suggest finding a web design company in your area and work for them for a couple years then venture off on your own (and take clients with you).

The bottom figure should be about $100 for an easy 5 page site, more complex sites at 1k+. But keep in mind that once the core of the site is done the other pages are quick and easy to add. So for some people that could be $100 an hour and for others $100 per day. Depends on how efficient you are and your library of everything needed.

?? are you still selling HTML sites?

      nobody charges by page anymore

even if I did i would never do a site for only $100 - even a 1 page site!

LOL honestly you shouldn't even consider selling web design services or you will be just like every other amateur who thinks they can make money with web deisgn just because they know a bit of HTML

then they charge super cheap and it's ridiculous.. since you go around offering $100 web design, then every business owner thinks that they should not have to pay any more than that for a website.. but in reality it's the difference between hiring an amateur with no experience and a real professional.

no worries, you guys can have all the cheap-skate clients and save the high-end ones for me.. keep scraping the bottom of the barrel and hoping to get rich LOL!

How much a web designer makes is largely situational.

Of course, how good you are at what you do plays an important part in your earnings but it's not everything. Often, how you conduct your business and interact with clients can act in your favor. And, as long as you can admit defeat and hire a credible freelancer for a couple of hours to sort out things you find you can't deliver, you shouldn't run into any huge problems. The worst thing that could happen would be to start off and find yourself just making your clients angry. A great way to start a new endeavour, eh?

As for what to charge when you're first getting started, I would suggest that you offer a few local businesses your services free of charge. That way, you can test the waters and get a feel for what a web designer is actually asked to do. You also learn faster from experience.

Realistically, if you're just getting started with web design, Photoshop, Dreamweaver and so on, it'll be about 1-2 years before you can really start marketing yourself. This timeframe is quite fluid though. If you work hard and are dedicated to learning design techniques and the latest development methods used, you could be making $5k a month as soon as both you and your clients feel that your skills are worth that amount.

I charge approximately $1,000 per website, with about 10 on the go at any one time, and they're usually a customised WordPress installation or a custom CMS built to the clients requirements. Granted, I 'designed' my first website when I was 11 (I'm now 24) and though it was awful (It was a single page website about Pokemon that consisted only of animated GIFs), I've continued to learn and obviously produce very high quality work now.

I think the most I've earnt off of one website was $2500 and it took about 8 hours of design/development work and 2 twenty minute meetings at Starbucks. :p

Value does depend a lot on market and skills. They're never exact but many already gave you some good estimates.

One thing I'd like to add is if you're doing this locally make sure you aren't undercutting the market too much otherwise you're just devaluing yourself. As long as you can perform what is required never charge overly low "just to get that job". It's not worth!

I think there is good money to be made in websites don't get me wrong, but you have to seperate yourself as just any other designer that can make a nice looking website. If you bring value through SEO, or through branding, or social media efforts than you can put numbers and values to your pricing. If the client is going to get a proven ROI that will bring them in business they will go with you. Atleast the smart business will. It's not about being penny wise and pound foolish

Obviously, some people are completely off...

    SEO is not web design.
Screwing with a few WP template files is not web design.
Coding 3-5 html files is not web design.
Making a logo is not web design.

And if you couldn't figure out till now what is web design... you'll never will

Oh, and since "design" is on the creative side of things - it was sad to see there was one word that has never been mentioned in this thread: TALENT.

      "TALENT"

US statistics, I believe recently say that a web designer, can make at entry level around 40,000 and upwards to 70,000 and even more if they are a creative director of a web agency.

Of course this is slave labor for sure...................... you will be pushed to produce large volumes of stuff, and probably get burned out within months. Unless you just absolutely love working for others...........

If you are talking 5000 US $, you're going to find it difficult at the beginning. It takes a designer a few years to gain the right volume of business and good clients to get to a consistent 5K/month. And, unless you already have 10 clients you're working for, you will need a backup source of income. So, don't do this if it's just a hobby. The frustration of working with some of these clients will drive you crazy! But, if you love to design, it will be worth it until you get a bunch of really great clients you can work with every day.

All this is on the desire and how much time your willing to learn. Are you self motivated and can you do things on you own? There is a big learning curve depending on what software you going to use. The investment for software is not cheap and if you go to school it may 3-6 months to get started. I have found Wordpress the easiest only cause there is so much how to's out there. Another way is purchase the right hosting that may have RV site builder installed in the C-panel and it has over 700 templates and tutorials to walk you through. I am in the process of moving my membership site to wordpress and I have all that in my site. Hosting, tutorials, and more. I am no pro by means but at least I have control or my content and can change things when I what. My budget was small when I started. And I pay someone to do my headers and graphics. But I am learning that as I go. Then I do the rest. I am terrible at copyright and need help. With Wordpress there is so much out there it took me 3 themes till I found the one works best for me. Trail and error.
Next you need to find the clients to do web design. A lot of local business have sites but unless you can help them get traffic, capture leads, follow up with and autoresponder. Re doing or getting them to spend more money is a little more difficult. So I use a system that I can enhance there website without involving there web designer and make up front money setting it up with very low learning skills has been working for me. Softwares, and systems nowdays have easy to use features without all that schooling and training are becoming the way of the future. here are two personal site I have done Color Country Painting – Quality Services You Deserve! In the real sense your earning capacity depends largely on your skill, marketing and how you present your self.

Being a web designer is not just learning how to use Photoshop..etc. Even if you dedicate your whole life learning it you'll never be on top if you do not have the creativity and talent in this field. Sure everybody can sing but not everyone can sell albums.

There are many members here who feel superior but the truth it is their design skills are crap and i can't imagine how they call themselves designer and can't believe they charge too much for some crappy outdated 90s looking made from Paint designs.

If you are really interested and wants to take this path. Start reading and reading and following tutorials and experiments on things you feel you be good at. Good luck and i hope you find yourself doing the thing you love most.

Here in Ireland a web designer needs to know at least Photoshop, Dreamweaver, HTML, CSS and have 2-3 years experience in that.
Salary is anything from 25'000 to 50'000 EURO/Month.

But look at Themeforest.net. So many designers are selling their templates and make up to 150'000 USD within a few months.

I guess it all depends on what you are looking for. Carres vs. Self employment.

It really depends on the quality of service offered by each designer. There are various ways each designers make money. Some go into complete customization where as some are in theme development or graphic product which they sell as package (Example: Themeforest, woothemes). So it's hard to say. Also prices really differ from country to country. For example, a designer from X country would charge more then designer from Y country.

How much you can make in any kind of business depends on the profit level and your clients. You also can not use how much a person make to measure how much you will generate because individual capability, skills and exposure are different.

Again, the duration it will take you to learn how to become a super web designer is going to depend on the programs you are interested in and how fast you can grab. Three month should be ok to gain proper knowledge of full web design.

As others have said, the money aspect can vary. I start out at $1000 for a very basic website and charge more as they add more bells and whistles.

My advice to you would be if you have some skills already try to find some people you can make a website for and learn about working with deadlines and customers. Start small and work your way up.

A web designer can make as much as they desire and within a very short period of time hit the 5k/month. It all depends on your creativity, how fast you can spot opportunities and how much input you are willing to have.

Factor in marketing your services. Market yourself crazy...

getting 5K a month is not a big amount to get as a web designer means you can have it very easily. You first have to go through some course for learning web designing. You should join a web designing course at-least for 6 months and keep on practicing as practicing is the must in carving your web designing skills.

Well, something to consider - I have seen jobs in my local Newspaper for a Web Designer to work for a company; I've seen these positions come up several times in the past few months and generally the salery for such jobs is £800 p/w GBP.

That's just to give you a perspective from my local point of view, and I live in a town in the county of Suffolk in the UK.

However I have also noticed these positions generally ask for more than HTML, CSS and Photoshop Skills - they generally want you to be proficient in JAVA, PHP and other web based scripting languages.

    I hope I was helpful,

    A3.

First of all, welcome to the WarriorForum and congrats on your new journeys, hope they will be happy ones for you!

Since you have received some great feedback already, I will just add that web design is a service that will always be in demand as long as we have the internet.

Custom web design remains my #1 requested service from our customers. This is why I always work closely and network with other web designers as I simply cannot do it all.

How much can you make as a Web Designer? There is no limit on how much you can make on-line, and I mean that seriously.

There is also plenty of work right here on the WarriorForum. If you become a great at Web Design, Website Development, Graphics, Conversion Designs, etc., we will find you and the money will follow.

Hope this helps...best of luck to you, Leah

If you are going to go freelance then remember your continuation income stream. I do websites not for the "web design" money (although it is great cashflow) but for the hosting and related stuff.

I do SEO work and link building + hosting. Things I can charge a monthly fee for. Just on hosting renewals alone I do approx $3k pm now. Then SEO + link building + web design must still be added.

In fact make more on the continuation services than I do with the actual 'web design".

So if you are going to go freelance, I suggest you look at how you can build a "business" from it and not just a job. If you leave the hosting + SEO + social media etc out then you are leaving the major part of your income on the table. You will also be able to go on holidays and take a break some times as you will not be dependant on building websites to make money. In just building websites you will just have a job, not a business. if you are not building websites then you are not making income.

For my market $300 - $500 is roughly the price point for their 5 page websites but I make double and tripple that from the lifetime of the client as they eventualy sign up for the secondary stuff. I am now at a stage where if I only get 2 -3 new clients per month I do not worry about it, the "business" has multiple streams of income and the lifetime value for a client is much more than the $300 that I am going to make from them for just their website. For me, selling the website is just a means to get the long term income.

Web designers use to make 30 - 35 k easily by making a static website, but if u are talking about competition between two webdesigners then the price hikes to 50 k also.

Anyone ever hear the saying "...a jack of all trades, master of none"?

Some of you people are lumping vastly different skillsets under the umbrella of "web designer". Social media, SEO, coding, design...

The coding and design of websites are two completely different animals. Yes, some people do both. Very few do both well. Almost no one does everything well.

But perhaps the most important aspect is, to use a fancy term, 'client acquisition'. Getting the gigs in the market you're going after. How do you differentiate yourself in the market?

When you're starting out, the market you're going to necessarily be in the middle of is the lower-end sites. You don't know enough, you're not experienced enough to play with the professionals. What you're likely to produce will probably one level above 'junk'. You're not going to be able to charge any kind of premium, and you're going to work your ass off for pennies.

If you stick with it long enough to get some experience, you can start fishing in the smaller ponds where the talent pool is a lot more competitive, but so are the rates. You begin to realize that you now have a different skillset than the bottom-feeders and you can charge accordingly. You also understand that it is to your advantage to partner with someone who is better at some things than you are.

I don't "design" any more. I can do it, but I don't like to. I work with a fantastic graphic designer who can work to my specs and deliver carefully considered designs based on what we know is good for the client's site. She's good, and she gets paid very handsomely for it.

How much can you make? If you become a sought-after expert in an in-demand aspect of the field, $100K+ per year is certainly doable.

How much will you make? That's entirely up to you.

Without more detail, I can only make a general comment.

    It depends on the following:
    1. How good you are
    2. How big is your client base?
    3. How quickly can you deliver?
    4. Will you work alone or with a company?

There are several variables to consider, but if you are proficient, fast and effective, then you can charge above the average for this service in your area.

Since you don't know how much to charge, I'd think it would be good to network with similar minds and talk to people in the field of web design to give you an idea of where you could start.

It can vary enormously depending on what region you live in. I'm in a regional city in the UK and I charge myself out at £15 per hour, because I'm only recently started out on my own and I'm focussing on small business clients.

    Depends on many things, there are few of them;
Where are you from, (where you work)
How good and talented are you, (quality of your work)
How much hard working are you, (effort you invest in job)
    Your business strategy
    How lucky are you

On avg, can earn up to about £5k a month - been freelancing tho for like 8 years, full time freelance last 4 years. Starts of low of course and as u build up clients, more will come, some months depending on the work load - its not stop work to get project complete on time - even to its very rewarding ( well i find it to be ) it can be stressfull ( as with most jobs ) the wrong client can easily cost u way to much time, and effect other client work.

    Different thinking.

Let me suggest that you will earn exponentially higher income by generating traffic and closing sales than you ever will by becoming an outstanding Web Site Designer.

Decide on what you want, more money or to feel good about your website design skills. You can always find someone to build your clients websites.

Of course the next step would be to have other people generating the traffic, closing the sales, and building your clients sites. But I digress...

Web developers ($60k-$90k) make a lot more than web designers ($30k-$50k). I'm surprised how many people don't know the difference. These are avg. salaries at companies. I know a few web developers making well over 6 figures on their own. I honestly don't know any successful web designers.

it really depends, starting out I would make around 3-400 a week or so.

    now I make around 90-100k ( web development - design,coding, etc etc )

not including income from other avenues ( own sites, and products )

most companies now a days aren't looking for "designers" , if your strictly a designer, might want to consider the print industry. Mainly because is you don't understand the functioning behind the design, you will make things that add work to the developers plate, he will complain, and at the end of the day the developer is more valuable of an employee so the designer either takes the heat or takes a hike.

But I also work 50-60 hour weeks and receive calls from large corporations at 2am to fix a database system.

really just depends how dedicated you are, how knowledgeable and how far you want to take it

also usually its a slow long road that eventually speeds us FAST.

you will go from practically begging for work to scrape by for a while, and if your good, will eventually get to the point where you have 10 offers come in for the week, time to do 4 and have to decide which jobs you want to do, or hire others to take up the slack

<--- successfull web designer hehe. Just kidding. Couldnt even get $30 per month haha...
but uh just for everyone's fyi, I'll try to post few things from a web designer point of view.

Im not going to tell how much web developers make, since its a different thing.
this is me (an established expd web designer), aight. different ppl in diff country will have diff stat.
day job : workin in a web design company, with $300 per month with additional income from $300-$1000 per day depends on the project. I also do web development here, and the money going to be different (much more). altho i dont have to wake up at 2 am in the morning hehe.. clients having problems, they call the company we work on it the next day. or the night shift guys already got it.
freelance : few hours work per night with $$150-$2000 per project. only if you already have many existing clients and order from you over and over again.

maybe you're refering to as a freelance here, it will take a while before you can make good money just like most of the things in IM.

my advice, if its something you're passionate about, go for it. and yes you can make good money and good living out of it.

I think you can normally change more to your offline clients than your online ones. You can meet with your offline clients face to face and it's quite easy to build up trust with them. That's why they're happy to pay you thousands easily. When it's online, you don't have that much time and it's also quite hard to build trust with your visitors during their visits. You have to have something very attractive to keep them reading and hopefully buy eventually. You can't just offer average standard services and still change them above average prices. While people can come to your site, they can also easily find other sites offering better deals. You have to stand out to succeed.

I am a self-taught web designer who started off approaching a vendor about doing their website for trade so I could build my portfolio. He agreed and the rest is history.

With that said, you have to remember that web design is a cyclical business. I make good money because I work for a company and I freelance, but as a freelancer you have to have alot of clients in the pipeline if you expect to make $5k a month because clients procrastinate. And honestly, as a freelancer its rare to find clients who are willing to fork out over 5k for a website if you have no programming skills -especially in this economy. Go look on elance.com for proof of this. Most people have a budget under 1K. So more than likely, you will need several clients going at once, and you have to have the ability to market for new clients on a continual basis. Now, if you can include more than web design in your services, such as hosting, maintenance packages, SEO and programming, you will do much better. If you don't have some of those skills, network and build yourself a circle of references. For example, I am not a programmer and I hate SEO, so when someone wants those services, I have other people do that stuff and then build in a profit for myself. It also depends on where you are located. In the US, you will make more money than if you are in India. And if you decide to bid on projects be prepared to get under cut by the people from India and Pakistan every single time.

At the end of the day, I personally would recommend - don't quit your day job, start honing your web design skills and building your portfolio. If things go well you can transition over as a full-time freelancer without having as much financial stress. Hope that helps!
