Custom Menu Location

Can someone please explain to me why in every Wordpress theme I've looked at the custom menu locations are always top navigation or bottom navigation, but I never see a theme that has the sidebar as a location.

Is the idea simply that you use the custom menu widget to put your menu in the sidebar? But does that make it go away in the other places, so you don't have the same menu twice on the page?

I sense there's a big gap in my understandiung of menus that I'm trying to fill in.
