Best way to set up a search box for your own website?

Hi,

I know wordpress and drupal etc, can add search facilities to websites. But there are some downsides to the way they work.

Also, we have a few largish legacy sites which just contain static html pages.

So we want to add some better search facilities to some of our sites.

It seems that there are two basic ways of doing this:

1) Running a script yourself on your own server.

2) Using some kind of hosted service such as Google Site Search, Fusionbot or Picosearch.

Most of the later seem to cost between $200 and $300 a year for the size of sites we need it for.

Does anyone have any recommendations for which search facility to add to some of our sites?

We don't want ads to appear on the search result pages and so I guess that is why there is a fee.

I don't particularly want to use Google Site Search as I don't feel comfortable giving google even more data, based on my reading on this so far.

Has anyone any recommendations?

Thanks,

Sam

Well, I guess it depends on your site's content, but when I set up Google Custom Search on one of my sites it appeared to help its performance in the natural search results. So I've been very happy with it.

    Cheers,

    Martin.
