Free Seo Tool has told me that the loading time for my sight is slow and that this is affecting my ranking.

Unfortunately it does not give any suggestions for fixes.

Anyone able to help? Suggestions for strategies would be appreciated

the site is My Restful Sleep

It's a WP site with a bunch of plug ins installed so maybe one of them is dragging it down?

could it be a hosting problem?

If you're on a cheap shared hosting plan then yeah it may be a fairly slow server.

First, deactivate all your plugins and see if it loads faster. then reactivate them until it gets slow again and you'll be able to tell if it is a specific one.

Download Firebug for Firefox, or if you use Chrome it's built in, just right click and go to Inspect Element. One of the tabs is a timeline and you can see how long elements take to load.

Woman: How much do I owe you for the sketch?
      Picasso: 5000 francs.
Woman: But it only took you 5 minutes!
Picasso: No madam, it took me all my life.

        Thanks

I am on the second level Gator hosting plan (shared, unlimited domains, max 100,000 nodes)

I had already started deactivating the plugins but hadnt thought of the Firebug tip - thanks for that!

Wow! I didn't know that before, that's an awesome tool!

I can only chime in with the previous people: Try finding plugins that make your site load slower. Try reducing the size of the images.

Wordpress with many posts and pages shown on the first page and many plugins installed sadly is very slow.

It has to execute so many different PHP files and retrieve a great amount of data from the database.

You can try caching, like WPSupercache. That sometimes helps. For future reference, this is a great tool: Page Speed Online

Unfortunately HostGator doesn't support compression, which would give you a nice boost. Check out the above site for some other suggestions though.

it could be because of hosting problems or using of heavy flash files.
