Hello

A question about backing up data, I hope this is the right section.

I dropped my back up hard drive on the carpet and killed it, and yes it is dead, after spending a few days trying to get it back to life, I have to say it has passed on. Not a huge problem in this instance, but it served to remind me that hard drives do die.

Also I just checked an expensive set of gold cd disks, I find that one of them cannot be read, and that is morer serious as it contains childhood pics of our daughter through a whole year.

So now I am contemplating backing up my data online, I have read about it and the advantages seem to out weigh the disadvantages.

I don't need automated back up, I would prefere to do this manualy.

I don't need vast amounts of space, a couple of gigabytes would do.

Can anyone suggest a good service based on my needs.

Thank you for your comments.

Richard

Life Hacker has an article on their site that list 5 back up services their readers recommend. I've not used any of these personally so I don't know who good/bad they are:

all good online backup systems are costly. If you are looking for cheap ones, there are lots and every single one of them have some issue or the other... your best bet would be just buying another hard drive and keep backing up stuff at home...

online backup systems work great for people like road warriors or for companies who have the money to invest big into remote VPN and online backup facilities...

    cheers,

A backup isn't a backup unless you have two copies of the data somewhere, i.e. external hard drive or CD/DVD/Bluray AND a Online backup facility.
