Royalty Free Photos and images?

Hi Guys,

I need some photos and images for my websites and I need free royalty-free photos. Almost all of the websites I checked are kind of scam. They claim they give you royalty-free photos but at the end of the day they give you nothing for free and rather the photos are really expensive. Some of the other ones ask you to link back for a crappy free version. That doesn't work either for my websites. Do you know any real websites for getting free photos?

Thank you,

    hidentist,

    you can use, istockphoto.com, fotolia.com

i always use image from both,

and i printscreen the website that sell free royalty image,
so that next time, if the website claim the image,
we have evidence that these image are "totally free royalty image"

    hope this help^.^

istockphoto.com is the only place I use for stock photos. Get the low-res "web" versions (usually referred to as small or xsmall) and it's usually just a $1 or $2.

Some sellers will jack their prices way up, ignore those, most sellers you can get a nice small res photo for a dollar or two.

Check out Photodune, there are problably the cheapest stock images ever.
$1 for extra small, $2 for small, $3 for medium, $4 for large and $5 for extra large images.

It's a kinda new stock images site and it's still in beta, but there are truly great and cheap images!

As far as I know, as stated above - the site sxc.hu (stock xchange) is one of the ONLY sites that you can get completely free images. Just to clarify, plenty of sites offer royalty-free images but that just means you only pay a 1-time fee.

It's kind of difficult to find quality, large COMPLETELY free images, but sxc is definitely the best place for it. You can try deviantart as well, a community based site. There are tons of images there too, many people DO want crediting or at least a link to where you use it, but some don't require any credit whatsoever.

What sites have you tried and/or found scammy?

Also, feel free to PM me for any kind of retouch services for any photos you do find. If you find a great photo with some distracting background elements, I can professionally cut the background out or tone the photo up to look it's best.

Hope you found this helpful, good luck to ya.

Legally you cannot use a photo you find on the web with out the photographer's permission.

Stock photography websites contain thousands of existing photographs that can be licensed for specific uses. A customer who uses stock photography instead of hiring a photographer can save time, effort and money. Typically publishers can either purchase exclusive rights to a single image or they can purchase a subscription of sorts. The subscriptions allow publishers to download a limited number of photos over a specified period of time.

Stock photo websites allow webmasters, marketers and publishers to locate pictures for their marketing and promotional materials without the hassle of organizing a photo shoot. With copyright laws businesses must be very careful in using unlicensed photos.

There are also risks to using "free" photographs. Many of the free websites contain collaborative works from multiple photographers and artists. While the websites attempt to monitor the images in their collections in violation of copyright laws, there are no guarantees. If you opt to use photographs or images from a free portal, it is important to keep this in mind.

My favorite stock photo website is Royalty Free Stock Photos

The Creative Commons section on Flickr is a great place to get images from. Most just require that you give them credit somewhere.

Thanks for sharing guys, a recent place I stumbled on is microsoft/templates/images. They are totally free no optin and after reading their terms of service what I understood is it is a free sharing community, maybe someone else can clarify more on this site.

      *whispers a little secret*

If you go to your local 'PC World' or other big computer store and look for the discounted software section. Here you will no doubt find a few 'Photographic Clipart' disks, very cheap.

I know what you are thinking, won't these be totally rubbish?

The thing is, software has indeed changed radically over the last years, but photos are photos are photos.

I recently got three disks for £1.99, each had 200 really good quality royalty free photographs on them. One set was business pictures, they were PERFECT for advertising.

They were cheap because they had first been issued on disk in 2002.

I also found a big set of skies, textures and other background type photos for £2.99. A good sky photo is just as useful now as it was when it was first put up for sale in 1998, hehe.

Oh, and by the way, I am a professional graphics artist, so I am horribly fussy about imagery. But a good photo doesn't 'go off' with age, does it?

Next time you are in your local pc shops (or department store etc) do check out their 'cheap old stuff' section, this is one area you really can find bargains :p

Lately i was referred to sxc.hu which is full of great photos.
BUT when i really need a high quality photo i go to gettyimages.
    Great quality although rather expensive.
