Recommended wordpress plugins

bought a domain last night, got wordpress setup and a really nice theme, now is there any plugins you guys recommend? this is a weight loss site, I need to try and find some affiliate marketing crap to push too, thinking of going with pills, as those are popular and cheap to ship but if anyone has other ideas feel free to share

    These are the basic free plugins that I use. I am sure others will add several more good ones but these work well for me.

    • The list is ok...... but i want to add following ones :-

      WP-DBManager - automatically backs up your wordpress data
      antivirus (Search wordpress plugins)- Checks your theme for anything suspicious
      WP-Security-Scan - Checks for server permissions issues, the database for security risks and more
      Bad Behavior - Blocks the spam bots from getting website content and emails.

    There are no "must-have" plugins... maybe the anti-spam but that comes with your package.

    Other than that everybody should install ONLY plugins from trusted sources and ONLY for specific features that YOUR blog needs. And your blog's needs are, probably, completely different than mine. Or everybody's else.

    • Certainly agree with the above. Some plugins are waaaay more trouble than they're worth (break your blog trouble...) so make sure you do your research and use reputable plugins only.

      That said, if you don't want hundreds of comments to the tune of "hey this great u really know ur stuff..." with a link to the "commenter's" site in the name field, do yourself a favor and install the anti-spam plugin mentioned above. You'll need your API key.

      Other useful ones are Contact Form to build a shortcode contact form for different purposes (take this with a grain of salt, I haven't tested it recently), All in One SEO, and sometimes I use Raw HTML if I'm importing HTML from another site and Wordpress mangles it.

      I just installed eShop for my PLR store. I'm actually really liking it so far! Easy to use and it handles everything without me having to use bulky Paypal code. Great if you're running an online store, especially for digital products. (I know you're not, but if you expand to sell your own products in the future )

      For affiliate marketing, how are you setting up your site? If you're doing reviews, a product review plugin where you can at least assign star ratings is great. I had trouble finding one that wasn't out of date or paid version only, but I'm also not an active affiliate marketer. Someone else may be able to name a plugin directly.

  • Just keep in mind that every plugin you use slows your site down to some degree, some more than others.

    If you don't absolutely need it, don't even install it.

    IMHO, the only plugin that can be considered 'essential' is Akismet. But if you don't allow comments ( IOW, you're using WP as a 'site builder' rather than a blog ) you don't even need Akismet.

    • As far as SEO goes here is an excellent article by Yoast instructing you what plugins and changes you need to make to have you website optimized. It's a great article and goes into detail as to why all of the plugins are good for SEO.

  • WP plugins are recommended according to your needs, what kind of site you have. for example if you have video blog, you'll need plugins for videos and etc.
    But basically, you should use
    All in one seo pack
    XML sitemaps
    Google Analytics
    and may some security plugin.

  • Just be careful to use plugins from trusted source and not more than u absolutely have too (will slow your site down).
