Help, wordpress is killing me!

Here's what is happening. I have hostgator, i added a new domain through the addon domain option, i installed wordpress using fantastico like i've done many times but for some reason the id/password wouldn't work on the wordpress login page.

So i watched some videos on doing a manual install of wordpress using ftp thinking this would fix my problem. This worked and I was able to login to the admin panel in wordpress. I thought it must be a fantastico error or something.

I went to the general settings in wordress for my new site and changed the site url. The url included my primary domain of my server so it was something like http://www.primarydomain.newdomain.com but I wanted the standard www.mynewdomain.com

I changed the url but now I can't login again! I have lost 5 hours working on this. Can someone please help?

I have installed wordpress through fantastico so many times and never had a problem. Now i've wasted all day trying to do a simple wordspress installation for a new domain which should take minutes.

I have no idea what's going on or why I been put through this torture lol.

  • Reinstall it or check password on phpmyadmin

    • I already did. I reinstalled it through fantastico like 5 times. That's when I thought maybe fantastico wasn't working and decided to learn manual installs.

I watched videos on doing manual installs thinking fantastico was broken. I installed it manually through ftp, loged in to the wordspress admin area, changed the site url in general settings. When i tried to login to the wordspress admin area again it wouldn't let me.

And no the phpadmin thing didn't work when i did it with my fantastico installs. I changed my pw and it wouldn't work so that's when I decided to do manual installs.
  • as far as I know hostgator doesn't allow addon domains in their hatchling package. what package you are in?

    • I'm on the baby package that's not the problem.

the wodpess install went through but when i logged in to my new domain in wordpress and changed site url to remove my primary domain (it was primarydomain.newdomain.com) to just my newdomain.com it won't let me login in wodpress anymore.
  • Hey you can simply fix this by opening up PHPMyAdmin and going into the wp_options table. There you will find entries for siteurl/home. You can edit those to be the correct domain.

P.S- WOO First post ! Let me know if you want me to fix this for ya, I'll do it for free

Edit:- Make sure you are editing the right database as you have more than one Wordpress install!

    • I did that already. Looked at my phpmyadmin and the url was the url that i put in my wordpress general settins

      http://www.mydomain.com

now my wordpress admin/pw don't work

I been trying to add a site for 2 days now. I changed the url in phpadmin wp_options in 2 places where it goes (id 1 and 37) and my domain still goes to myprimarydomain.com/newdomain rather than mynewdomain.com (plus I can't even login)
  • Do you have a backup of your site?

If yes, I would suggest you to contact Hostgator, ask them to clear all the data in your account. Upload a fresh Wordpress and move ahead

    • This hardly requires such drastic action! Also he said it's a fresh install so how would there be any backups?!
