What would you like to know about graphic design?

Hey fellow warriors!

I have an idea and I need some advice:

I'm pretty good at graphic design, photoshop after effects (promo videos and effects), etc.

I don't get many freelance opportunities because I haven't really 'advertised'. But I came up with an idea:

I make video tutorials of how to do things in photoshop and after effects (web 2.0 graphics, headers etc). I'll make 'em good quality and upload them to a site. I give people the tutorials, then advertise my freelancing work and also another bonus video tutorial package with extra cool stuff in it!

Would you guys go for something like this?

If so why?, and if not why?

thanks for your time

Mubarak

    Hey Mubarak,

You'll definitely get some exposure from this, although I'm not sure it's the most effective method.

See, people who are learning design on the internet and people who're looking to hire a designer for them are usually very different people.

I imagine usually people who want to learn design are students or beginning small time online business entrepreneurs. People who hire designers, especially the ones that will pay a lot, are successful businesses who'd rather pay money than spend time on anything.

    My 2 cents

    Hey,

    Besides the LARGE competition....

I would not go for it.

Frankly, I don't have the time to LEARN or TRY some photoshop effects and would rather outsource or pay for it.

    That is me though...

That's what I'm saying. That's the kind of guy you want to target. Not the guy who says "Well, I got nothing better to do, might as well learn some photoshop."

There is massive competition, but if you can differentiate yourself, you could still get a lot of business.

thanks. My thinking here was that I could kill 2 birds with one stone.

    1. I sell the full package of tutorials to anyone looking to learn

    2. After every tutorial and on the site I offer links for freelancing, so people can se what I can do, and then are able to ask me to make something for them.

Check out the Warrior for Hire forum. A small investment of $20 there has earned me several thousand dollars in a few short months.

    Here is my advice:

Design a sick page... as a designer your first impressions are extremely important, especially to someone looking to outsource work.

Then in your portfolio discuss some of your past work, and also attached to the past work create a video on "How to Design my Portfolio"

This way, instead of getting the normal, How do I design Text Effects, or Imaging, or Headers.... You will be teaching people that want to learn more sophisticated information.

Another plus, your video can show how much time and effort you put into your clients work as another selling venue for your freelancing.

thanks. That is really useful info.

I can get out a good video promo in a couple of days. I can do web 2.0 stuff like headers, footers, ecovers, RSS feed buttons in less than an hour, so Really I don't think much of it is a problem.

yeah ok. I know this really shouldn't be here to advertise my services, but it seems that people need promo videos. So, can I get an idea of demand, so I know whether to put up a Classified Ad.

So, who would like a promo video?

yeah, there is money to be made. But first I wanna make a name for myself, and buff out my portfolio. ATM my portfolio is wuite small, so before I advertise I just need small projects which I can use to build up my portfolio.

You can also do "studies" to pad out your folio. No one will care that much if you do sites for bobs-discount-candles dot com ... more impressive is if you have work in your folio from Adidas Golf or Honda Motocycles or [insert whatever international brand you want].

If you want a killer portfolio ... I would suggest you perform "Brand Studies"

      1. Pick a brand
      2. Give yourself a creative brief (e.g "web banner campaign for Nike Basketball 2009")
      3. Do the work
      4. Upload it on your site and label it "Brand study for Nike Basketball 2009"

Artists since the dawn of time have used "studies" to practice their skills techniques and you can benefit from dong the same.

      Cheers.

Cheers Chilpill. Most of my customers will be Internet marketers, so maybe if I take a few well known gurus and re-do their site pages!

    Thanks again for that info!

    IMO...
i think there is a huge need for a product that explains the basic web steps like uploading a file, using a WYSIWYG editor, editing a template/image with JPEG or other. The simple mundane tasks that many newbies would love to know but can't find answers on easily...

The short answer: Yes, I'd be interested in something like this. But as I'm sure you know, there are a million and 1 different needs and situations designers (and wanna-be designers) face. If your offer is 100% catered to individuals this could be amazing(for the user) but periodic for you. Unless you had dozens and dozens of examples that you can Sell them as being superior options, I think you are stuck with custom videos.
