Optimizing My WordPress site... (Calling WordPress Experts!)

Hi all,

Ok, I have a question about optimizing my WordPress site. However, I'm a little confused. (Warning: I'm not very techie!)

I have the Platinum SEO Pack plugin installed, but... My WordPress is custom-designed and the Fiverr guy who does occasional techie stuff for me told me it won't work because of the customization. (I'm not really sure how or why that is, though.)

Can someone tell me how to optimize my site as much as possible? I'm not quite sure how to do it.

I mean, I write articles (posts) with my keywords; the name of my company (which has my target market in it) appears in the page title of the home page; and the title of each blog post appears in the title of the page when they click on it to read it. (So it appears: "Company Name >> [Article Title]."

Since my target market AND my article titles include the various keywords I'm targeting, that's good SEO. (But I'm not manually tagging each article with different keywords.)

But that's pretty much all I've done. What else can I do to optimize my site? The customization-interrupting-the-usability-of-SEO-plugins has me confused.

I'd appreciate any help!

Thanks!

Michelle

    Hi Michelle,

I suggest that you go back to your fiverr guy and ask him to clear this up for you. He knows your web site and it is much easier to do with the actual web site in front of you.

    But:
It could very well be that nothing is wrong with your web site at all; just your fiverr guy is confused.

I need to look at in more depth again.

But I don't think he's confused. When I looked at it a while back and tried the plugin, it didn't seem to work.

I will have him look at it again.

      Thanks,

    Hi Michelle,

I am not sure the Fiverr guy knows what he is talking about..

I would switch from Platinum SEO to "All In One SEO Pack" though (maybe just because I am used to it).

Within the control panel you can set how you want the title displayed etc. But more importantly you will see a menu on each "create page/post" page you go to which allows you to put in your "Title", "Description" and "Keywords" - Ensure your keywords and possibly related keywords show up in all of these (also ensure the description is enticing to people scanning search engines results!)

Now, check that these are actually outputting on your site and the theme is not somehow blocking it:

Right-click your homepage and click "view source" (or similar)

Ensure these tags come out in the header section:

    <metaname="keywords" content=".........

    <meta name="description" content=".........

Hint: use your browsers find feature to find "keywords" etc.

As long as these are appearing on your pages, it is all set up fine

    Hope this helps

      Michelle,
out-of-the-box plugins can work wonders for you. However you need to weigh your options.

Do you want amazing easy SEO or the real deal?

I've never heard of the plug-in you are using however there are many options out there.

Tried and true is the All-in-one option dadamson has mentioned, Thousands of people use this with great benefit.

I like a new-comer to the scene: yoast.com/wordpress/seo/ WordPress SEO Plugin - Search Engine Optimization Plugin - Yoast[/url]
I'm a fan because he has made so many amazing plugins before.

Do what you'll like but this guy knows WP and knows his programming.

          Ok guys,

I've installed it, but I don't think it's doing what it's supposed to.

I enabled the plugin and put in the home description and home keywords. When I view the source though, all I see is this at the top:

          <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />
          <meta name="robots" content="index, nofollow" />

NO meta keywords or anything like it. How do I even tell if it's doing what it's supposed to do???

Am I supposed to enable something else or otherwise change the settings? The FAQ didn't answer these questions.

Again, I'm not sure if this has something to do with the customization...

I would highly recommend WordPress SEO by Yoast. It is available on WordPress.org. It offers more control than All in One SEO plugin. I was using All in One SEO before WordPress SEO arrived on the scene. Wordpress SEO is very useful in analysing your articles/posts as well. It tell you what all do you need to do to make your content SEO-friendly. You can search for keywords and also get to know the keyword density as well using this plugin.
