Hey everyone,

I just started getting into HTML & CSS and it's pretty cool. I have great Photoshop skills and have a desire to become a web designer / programmer..

Can someone out of experience tell me how long it would take till you have enough skills to make some money with this and how?

What would the future hold for web designers / programmers?

Would it be a good thing to study?

  • Web design is like any business. If you treat your customers well and provide good value, you will be able to make money. You have to really learn marketing first.

The hardest part is keeping up on all the latest programming technological. It's best to learn HTML / CSS well and maybe one other language (PHP etc) and focus on that. Don't try to master everything at once.

    Best of luck

Learn html , css etc by using note pad and looking at wc3 schools.com . master these first or at least till you have a good knowlage of html then look at progressing further over time. Look at online tutorials as well as wc3 schools, may be get an open source web design software like NVU or something of that nature and use both to practice on.

As far as time go's to get to the stage where you can promote your skills and services .... well depends on YOU... and how much time you devote to learning the skills your looking for.

Then look at internet marketing and promoting after learning web design skills, as mentioned above ... one step at time, don't overload your self with to many things at one time. If web design is what your looking to do i personly would do this stage first and the others will follow as you go. The quicker you understand html, css, then enough php the faster your web design skills will evolve, the quicker you can move on to the next stage.

    Greetings, Vivekasigns

As an experienced and qualified Graphic Designer, I believe that you should continue learning Graphic Designing. It will lead you in a lot of businesses in the future and you will earn money fast.
You can watch some tutorials in this website : Adobe Photoshop Tutorials from Beginner to Advanced | Psdtuts+
Also, you should learn HTML which is the basic language of the website coding languages.
After HTML you should learn CSS, which is the next step, and then PHP for CMS's and better websites.
The difficultest language of all is PHP.
You can learn HTML, CSS and PHP from W3schools : W3Schools Online Web Tutorials

By learning these languages and having knowledge of Graphic Designing you will earn a lot of money.
You should sell your websites in Themeforest : Premium WordPress Themes, Web Templates, Mobile Themes | ThemeForest

Regardless your knowledge you can learn Graphic Designing and HTML easy, so what are you waiting for?
    Start up.

    Hope I helped,
    Good Luck,

    ~Healingoasis

Freelance switch had an article about the income potential of web designers, web developers and graphic artists over the next 5 years. Tons of potential for great income, especially if you can break into the larger segments. Graphic's and Development seem to be the two areas with the highest income potential.

I'd say the one thing you need to start right now, even as a beginner is developing a portfolio that shows your growing and improving. This gets your name out to people that you are up and coming. And can bring you smaller business as you progress towards becoming more talented and landing larger projects.

    good luck.

Learn HTML and CSS. Once you have done it, focus on WordPress. Create some good themes and offer it for free. Soon you will be getting new clients. All the best.

WOW, Thanks everyone for all the great advice and encouragement! I will definitely keep it up!

When building your online name what would be better? your real name, artist name or go under a new company name.. This might come down to personal preference but at the same time it might make different impacts on the public right?

Anyone has any good recommendations of sites that are good to follow to stay up to date with the latest news on web design?

Well I'm web designer for around 3years then shifted to mobile game developer, and that's the reason why I haven't interacted in the forum. anyway It's really about personal preference. but maybe you could consider placing a word "consulting" on the name like "<name here>Web Consulting" something like that, makes you look more professional and someone who is really expert on your field.. and! you can easily expand in the near future if you want to add some more services like SEO etc. hope that helps

I'm really thinking about starting a web design company myself (with a team of designers, developers, etc of course), what do you recommend the best way as to building a portfolio Marvin?..Should I look on freelance sites such as Elance, etc, or Craigslist for jobs (starting small of course), and then move onto bigger projects?..

Best place to start as a designer is to offer FREE themes. That's how I got my first client who paid me around $500 (don't remember the exact figure). With free themes, you are able to showcase your skills and people have more confidence in you.

Don't even bother to have a team unless you have a regular flow of work. If you want to start a firm where you just work as a manager, collaborate with freelancers.

I personally haven't done very well on freelance sites. Most of my work is through WF, free themes and repeat clients.

If you've got amazing Photoshop skills, not just knowing the software but creativity and composition, then you're way ahead of many. To make serious dollars you have push yourself to always learn more. If you could push yourself to get PHP certified, money will follow you to whatever corner of the Earth you choose to reside.

Designers generally can't code and coders generally can't design or compose, but those who can do both call the shots.

    Research Zend PHP 5 Certification

The kid with the most knowledge will attain and touch top dollars.

Your pages should also be search engine friendly. You want to ensure that you can make money from your pages as well. You can easily design pages for companies or you can even profit from them yourself. It simply depends on what you are qualified to do. Your pages should be appealing and easy for anyone to find.

I agree with everyone on this post. I do suggest using a CMS such as wordpress or joomla to build your customers websites. It will cut your time in almost half because you won't have to change every page when you need to change something simple like the nav bar. If you're interested in using wordpress talk to Mike Key. He's builds all of his sites out of wordpress. I build most of mine with Joomla and some with wordpress.

I agree..charge real cheap for your websites so you can get a bunch of them and build your portfolio. Once you have a good portfolio your can raise your prices.

  • There is a lot of good info on this page that will definitely get you going in the right direction. Many people have mentioned using Themeforest as a way to post your designs, but another thing you can do is buy a few templates that you like and look at the code and get an understanding of how they were constructed. Many sites now use J-Query which a framework for Javascript that you can do a lot of powerful things with. The image sliders you see on websites are done with J-Query. You can find these on CodeCanyon which is a sister site of Themeforest. In fact, check out Envato and you will see all the different sites that offer assets for the graphic designer/coder world. My point is that you can find assets that will help you in your journey so if you are having trouble with a css navbar you can look at CodeCanyon and purchase one. I have done this before, BUT I completely re-face it so the graphics are completely different.

The main thing is to not get discouraged in your abilities and practice, practice, practice. It is not out of the question that I will find myself working all night on a site to make sure I make a deadline. But the bonus is that I work from home and am willing to do that, but that did not happen overnight. I have been working as a web design since 98.

Good luck to you! Oh, and make sure you keep it fun...

Before starting to earn money with web designing, you need to be proficient enough to produce quality designs according to your client's requirements. Let's suppose that you have this skill than you can earn a good money by doing the following:

    1. Working as a freelancer web designer as there are many reliable outsourcing sites like freelancer.com, oDesk , vWorkers, Elance etc.

    2. Create or design attractive websites with unique contents (5-10 article will be enough ) using competitive keywords and sell them on website auction sites like godady etc.

    3. Build adsense sites for yourselves, do proper SEO and earn money.
    4. Design attractive themes and templates and sell on your website.
