Please help with Wordpress Permissions ?

I've setup WP DB and a Theme on my client's server which uses Plesk.

Problem is: When I try to upload images I get a pop-up message saying:

"Could not save file. Make sure your server permissions are correctly figured for uploads"

Is there a WP/Theme folder or file I need to change the permissions for? If so what is the file or folder name?

Thanks, I appreciate any help inadvance.

I'd love some suggestions or help from WP experts.

  • Use your FTP and maneuver to your WP uploads folder >> right click >> File permissions should read 755. That's the usual permission.
  • It depends on server configuration and software: on some servers you can upload images and other media with the folder (wp-content) permission 755, on other servers you would need to change it to 777.

    Normally, directories/folders should be 755 and files 644.
  • Use your FTP client (Filezilla, etc.) and navigate to your WP Upload folder, be sure your permissions are set to 755 for 'read and write'.
  • Istvan is correct, there are some server configs that will REQUIRE 777, 755 will not be writeable "enough" for it. So if 755 doesn't work, try 777. If that doesn't work, your problems rests somewhere other than permissions.

  • I am using the lastest version of WP 3.2.1. It does NOT come with a "Uploads" folder?

    Should I just create an empty folder named "Uploads", will that work?

    I have downloaded the zip from WP from WordPress › Blog Tool and Publishing Platform a secound time but it definately does NOT have include any folder by that name?
  • No, it never has it in the downloaded package.

    If the permissions are correct - WP will create that folder in wp-content. It will also create the year/month folders, depending on your settings.
    e.g. uploads/2011/11/ for this month.

    BTW, that's why it was "crying" about the permissions: it could NOT create the folders.

      I have never had this problem before.

      I have now set the permissions of "Content" folder to 777 and images are uploading successfully. Hooray!!

  • What was the permission set at before? If it was 775 then leaving it at 777 is fine, but if it was 644 or something else, I recommend trying 775 before leaving it at 777.
