The best CMS

I'm just wondering what peoples thoughts are on free, open source content management systems? I'm looking for something for a small business website, for a business owner who will need to be able to update it himself occasionally. I have not been involved in using these for a number of years, so I am not up on the ins and outs of the current software available out there. Any recommendations?

  • Yes My Friend - Go for the Wordpress. You would amazed !

  • YES GO FOR THE WORDPRESS!! IT'S best CMs IN THE WORLD
  • I agree with the those above.

    I'd recommend Wordpress also.

The website could be created as simply or feature rich as you wish, using the many Wordpress plugins available. You could purchase a template, hire someone to create one, or learn how to make one yourself. If you don't have the expertise to edit / create the template, you should still be able to easily edit and update the content on the website yourself once it is up and running.

Wordpress caters to people at all levels of web code expertise.

  • I don't know of any off the top of my head, I design my own wordpress themes. They don't look like blogs at all. Wordpress websites can look, pretty much like any type of website nowadays.

You could always hire someone, if you have it in your budget.
  • From everything I can find WordPress is the best out there.
I have been using it for a long time and it has always done well for me.
  • try wordpress and you'll be amazed!
  • Hi,you can use wordpress. And find a premium theme that suite for you.
wordpres has so many theme developers. you can make magazine like website, online store with many produts, or a squeezepage. ask google, and you will find many nice theme for our business

    • Well, Wordpress is more along the lines of a Blog Engine than a CMS, but like many others said, you can customize / have customized almost anything you want. If you wanted a true CMS, I would say go with Drupal or Joomla, but you did say that the business owner wanted to update the site by himself occasionally. For that reason, I would go with Wordpress for its ease-of-use. You can teach almost anyone how to use Wordpress in about 5 minutes.
  • Another vote for WordPress as the best CMS.
  • The idea of having the blog as a different page while using word press is really nice.I have been thinking of this and I would like to get more information about this.Any one to guide me?
  • I've used wordpress, drupal, and joomla but my two favorite are joomla and wordpress.
  • I shall also suggest you to use Wordpress because its easy to install and needs no high skills for administration and maintenance. Joomla is also good but a bit complex to use.
  • I've used wordpress and drupal and I've changed all pages except a few to wordpress.

For most projects, it's easier to set up and maintain, and marketing-wise, there are more plugins etc.

Drupal is much more complicated to set up and maintain (even though with drupal 7 many things are better now); however, there are some things that you couldn't do with wordress, especially if you're looking into creating more complex "social networking" sites.

So for your small business case: Wordpress.

    Cheers,
    Rob
  • Wordpress, and as Ben_R noted, changing the Reading Settings to static page plus blog page instantly turns it into a CMS. I've built e-commerce shopping cart sites in Wordpress, you can do anything with it.
  • Wordpress has really matured and can really serve as just about anything. There's a plugin for just about anything you want to do, and a theme for just about any look you want. There's also a good community behind it, and if you need to hire outside help for some customizations the fact that is has become so popular will allow to easily find good help.
  • I am partial to Joomla. However for a simple site Wordpress will be more lightweight and little more intuitive than Joomla.

    Both great platforms.
  • Joomla and Wordpress are both good calibres, but I prefer Wordpress more since it's simpler and easy to manage
  • wordpress just not for blogs, many website use wordpress for news or other professionals homepage.. i think you just need to search by google to find more of website using wordpress

About a year ago, I had to make a decision for a client about whether to hire a certain web design firm. My client would basically do whatever I told him. The firm suggested to him had lots of happy clients with nice websites; all built in Drupal. I, however, did not feel comfortable advising my client to hire this drupal-based web design firm. And here's why. I wanted my client to be positioned well for the long run. Not that this particular drupal firm wouldn't do a good job, but I was curious myself about where the direction of the internet was going.

So I did a little research. Although, the stats have changed some, here's what I concluded.

I've noticed that quite a few big commercial enterprise level sites use Drupal. Also, many big web design companies do custom drupal builds for high-dollar clients. So, is that what your client wants?

Historically, Wordpress has been used for small blogging sites. This distinction is now blurred. With many sites switching to Wordpress for ease-of-use, readily available themes and plugins, variety of themes and plugins, readily available skilled talent for hire, and more.

In fact, a growing larger percentage of all new websites are wordpress. Definitely the tide of popularity is gaining with wordpress.

I remember several years ago people predicting linux would kill windows. It obviously did not. Although linux is still widely used, it is no where near as popular as windows. My point, is that when it comes to technology, I prefer to be with what seems to be the most popular. Sure, people love drupal and joomla. But it appears they will be a smaller percentage; with the majority using wordpress. Typically, the most popular dominant technology will be around the longest, have the most appeal, and be the easiest to get help with. That's what I mean by making a good long-term technology decision.

And that's why I advised my client to choose a wordpress designer.

And oddly enough it got me interested in doing some hobby blogging. So now I'm learning wordpress too. How nice
  • I personally love WordPress. WP is an excellent CMS used for blogging or sharing thoughts in a sequential manner. It is very simple to use, even the most elderly of users can get the hang of it quickly. Wordpress is user friendly and also SEO friendly. WP is recommended for small business websites where community is not an issue.
  • Without any doubt; WORDPRESS!
  • I favor Joomla simply because I know it so well. But I guess Wordpress has a shorter learning curve and might be a bit more straight forward.
  • Forget anything anyone else recommends...

wordpress is the way to go. Just the fact that you're asking what CMS to use means wordpress is the best for you..

Everything else is too limited, and bugie..
Trust me. I have been using and used most CMS softwares out there, when the private ones in the IM world...

wordpress, design, code, admin... best place to start...

    hope this helped
  • Of course Word press is the best, we are also prefer Joomla.
  • I like to have custom CMS built. But if your on a budget for sure wordpress is a great CMS!
  • WordPress easy to install, use, and extend. If you simply need to get your pages online fast, then WP is the one.
Joomla is the #1 rich media publishing tool. It can Handle different groups who have view or edit rights to different pages.
Drupal is best if you need reasonable ACL. It can Handle access control levels/lists, ie multiple user groups.
  • I've used most of the other CMSs, but almost exclusively use WordPress now - and I've built probably 300 WP sites! So that's my suggestion.
  • I can't believe the responses. Of course, a bunch of wordpress groupies yet again, who have probably never used any other CMS.

Would it surprise you that there are other CMS platforms out there that are more flexible, higher quality, more professional looking than wordpress? Would it surprise you that I have over 150 clients that USED to have wordpress and since then have switched between Drupal and Joomla, and they have no regrets?

The first thing to realize is that each CMS has its purpose. You don't build wordpress sites when it is an ecommerce website. You don't build wordpress sites when it is an extensive and dynamic website.

If the sites are for your own, spammy internet marketing websites then wordpress is great. If its for a very low budget client, then wordpress is great. If you want to make some real money, learn the other platforms.

I used to love wordpress, until I learned everything else I needed. I would pick Joomla AND Drupal over wordpress hands down, unless I needed the project done in 30 minutes. I think since I started, probably have done 400 wordpress sites easily.. Since last year, I have stopped wordpress sites altogether as it really ISN'T the BEST.

If you get familiar with every CMS, you will realize which platforms are better for certain things.
  • Hey Nameless, I'm developing a site. Guess you could call me a "wordpress groupie" but I'd be interested in getting your opinion on which CMS to use. Believe I already PM'ed you once today and don't want to look spammy.. so may I shoot you another one for your opinion?
