wordpress question

Hi Warriors

I wondered if someone could shine a little light please...

Irrespective of whether my TLD is set as an html or Wordpress page, is it possiblto to have the second level, i.e. the whatever part of ".com/whatever" set up as Wordpress, independently of the main domain?

Setting up a new WP installation in Hostgator/cPanel/Fantastico would apper to suggest so; I'm talking about the "name only" box underneath the main domain drop-down menu, but when I try it (having set up a new file in the file of the TLD [so that I don't need to use .html extension]), it won't let me.

To summarise, I was hoping to be able to experiment with a wordpress website for a friend, without having to fuss over a dedicated TLD. So the site would be is the "whatever" part of www.mydomain.com/whatever

Hope I'm making sense...?

Thanks

  • Those are not files... those, i.e. example.com and example.com/whatever are directories (folders), the root folder and a subfolder, respectively.

In other words you want to install WP in a subfolder of a domain, not in the root.

It is absolutely possible! As I heard it, even with that fantastico gizmo...

Where it says "Install in directory" - write the name of the desired directory; Fantastico will create it. Fill out all the required fields below and hit Install.

    • Thanks Istvan, FOLDER is actually what I meant, not FILE! oops

Should I create a new folder for the WP within the folder that contains the main "index" page? (I'm guessing perhaps not, w.r.t. what you say above). I'll try and see what happens.
