Ok so ive been a PC user all my life (I'm 28) I also work in the IT field so I am used to windows problems. I am looking to switch to the MAC OS world and need some advice to see if it would be the right move.

For websites I generally use photoshop, dreamweaver and wordpress although im moving towards strictly WP with PS for graphics only. Is there a steep learning curve with MAC as ive probably spent 2 hrs lifetime on a mac computer. I heard in the recent version of MAC OSX they took out an ftp feature?

Right now I use filezilla for my ftp.

I am ready to go buy a mac but I don't want it to set me back in time and productivity. Any advice is appreciated and I apologize for the rambling.

Thank you,

    Hi,

You can use Filezilla for Mac, you can use Dreamweaver for Mac too if you prefer.

I don't think switching over will be a big issue if you consider yourself an experienced computer user. First few days will feel different, but I would suggest watching some videos and tutorials on getting started with a Mac as well as exploring some of the productivity features and I'm sure that you'll fall in love

Thanks for your reply, I did read a few articles on "the switch" but videos would probably be a good idea.

As an experienced computer user it will not be too difficult for you to get used to mac just that you would feel the difference at first. Also all webmasters tool such as Dreamweaver and Filezilla are usable on mac because they are not windows program they are independent software programs that can be used on any computer. However, you will not be able to use software such as notepad++ because it is a windows program but there is a mac alternative for it which is text-pad (premium) and also mac have alternative for Microsoft suite etc.

Just try it you will love the experience

I don't think you should have too much of a hard time moving over to a Mac. Just dive in. There's a lot of video tutorials for just about everything on you tube and other websites.

For what your doing it looks like a base MAC OSX install is all you need. The only thing I would add is maybe a good text editor, I recommend textmate, and a good FTP/SFTP program, I recommend transmit.

In case you want to setup some chat software I recommend, adium.

If you need more info, just ask.

I generally jump seamlessly between my Windows 7 desktop environment at the office and my Mac laptop when I'm on the go.

I'd say ditch Dreamweaver if you can - it's bloated overkill when it comes to WordPress development.

I agree with GioSec's recommendation of Textmate for Mac (Notepad++ on Win) or, if you're looking for a free alternative to Textmate, Textwrangler will do.

No matter how you proceed, nothing beats real experience. Set a goal for a project and use your new Mac to achieve it - no amount of online research or opinion gathering can compare to just diving in and getting dirty.
