Hey warriors,

I asked a similar question the other day buy I have one more on this subject.

A friend of mine wants her site changed to wordpress, it's a tiny four page website. I basically want to start the website fresh from wordpress, meaning transferring nothing over just starting with an empty worpress theme.

What would I need to do to accomplish this?
#html #worpress

Unless your friend wants a blog, the best service you could do her would be to dissuade her from switching to Wordpress!

As a blogging platform it is great but, for any other type of site, she would be better off sticking with HTML.

She doesn't want to rely on her web guy to make every change she needs and wants done. It's her companies site but she will be blogging

      Totally totally disagree.

Wordpress is *not* just for "blogs" - you can create entire niche sites off of it as well! And because there's thousands of quality free plugins you can incorporate, you have virtually unlimited expansion abilities.

That being said, you can simply view/copy the HTML of all 4 page text, turn on a Wordpress site, create 4 pages and paste in the info. I'm assuming, mind you, that the issue here *is* text and not graphics.

      Hope that helps!

That's rather like saying you can build a house out of mud. You can. But there are far better things you could and should be using!

Unless you are blogging, of course.

        Regards to all,

          Are you serious?

I really wonder what's your experience level with WP...

I agree. My site design clients LOVE wordpress for their static websites, since they don't have to wait on me to make changes for them.

                  I am a climate change skeptic... more exactly I don't believe it's man-made.

In the same time, I use WP since 2004 (anybody earlier?) and find it pretty much versatile - one can build a lot of different sites with it.

Having said that, I do NOT think it is the best platform for everything. Only idiots say that

My only problem with all of you that argue on both ends: you can think only in extreme opposites and thinking that your opinion is mutually exclusive with any other possibility...

Here's a better question: are you going to make any attempt to substantiate your claim that Wordpress is disadvantageous when used for a site that's not a blog, or are you just typing to see your own words on the screen?

Do you have any evidence that it isn't?

Why should that even matter? I'm not the one making the absolutist proclamations; you are. I guess I can take that as a no, then? I mean, if it was so clearly a disadvantage, I would think that you could have given one reason in your half dozen posts in this thread by now?

If you're thinking WP is better for your friend's site for ranking purposes, you're right. The structure behind WP is much easier to get some Google love from than a newbie trying to create an html site G likes.
I'd suggest, if it's simply a small 4 page site to just install WP in her domain and do some cut and paste creating the new pages within WP. Shouldn't take more than a few minutes to do the entire thing.
The big advantage of WP is the plugins that make almost anything possible as well as the ease of use for a newbie.
    Good luck.

In your original post, you stated that you would be doing the switch. If her "web guy" will be doing it, he should know exactly what to do. If he doesn't, she may want to look seriously at getting a new web management person.

If he's not a hardcore blogger and only uses html then don't tell him anything.

Go to warriors for hire of heck even fiverr and have someone set up a blog install for you if you have never done one.

Search themes for sale here and on fiverr you will find plenty. Get a super killer theme and rock on from there.

The site you want to do over is maybe a 2 hour job to do the WP install, set up theme, and rebuild her entire site. There are so many people here on the forum that could do this with their eyes closed it would make your head spin.

This is being made WAY harder than it needs to be, that's for sure.

There are tons of themes that will make her site now look like zero.
Go check out Wordpress Themes (not an aff link)

They have so truly nice themes.

Or, (other warriors help me out here) I forget the guys name but he always does a wso with 3 business themes at one time and his last set was really nice. I have heard his stuff is well coded as well.

You don't need any webmaster to do it. You can do it (it's really easy) or outsource it for a few bucks.

NOW @ BackLinkiT, I am sorry but you may wish to reconsider your position. I don't know what WP experience you have but I think you're barking up the wrong tree.

If you think for one moment that WP cannot be used instead of an HTML platform and even do it better then I think you may wish to re-evaluate your level of knowledge on the area.

Here is a site I built (I have 2 pages that are being worked on so don't come back here hollerin that my sites broken saying "see I told you or any junk like that". I know there are 2 pages needing work at the moment).
              NutriHarmony

Yes, it is a wp blog.
And I'm sure that many here on this forum could have done a far better job than I.

                They are... just that: tools.

Although whoever puts them in the same category is completely ignorant:
                - one is a html editor (design tool)
                - the other is a CMS; i.e. NOT a design tool.

This is one of the most common mistakes nice people make!

I completely agree with you. My meaning was simply for the needs of the OP of this thread that he doesn't care if ones a design tool and ones a CMS. He wants to punch out a site with little time and likely basic knowledge.

Please take it in this manner; yes a backhoe and a shovel are both tools one takes years to master the other anyone can use and he has a really tiny hole to fill.

                  I respect your statement.

They both are tools to get sites up on the internet (that was my meaning of they are both tools).

The purpose of this thread is to help him. His desire is to get a site up fast, easy and low cost I would imagine. And for that my feelings are that WP is the best tool.

I think i didn't explain myself well enough. I have a lot of experience with building worpress websites.

However I have no experience switching from html to wordpress.

What I want is her whole site erased and a fresh install of wordpress so I can create her a whole new site. I have all her images and content in a file.

For some reason the guy who built her site doesnt know how to do that. Thats what I need to figure out. I need to tell him how to install a fresh wordpress.

How I do that is go into my cpanel, click on fantastico and I'm done. I'm unsure if there's other steps because she already has an html site?

No, you don't if you have no idea how to do a manual install...

Install WP in a subfolder, re-create all the pages, images etc. (the content) from the old site... when it's done, delete the old stuff and move your WP install to the root.

lol ok, I use and have installed wordpress for all my websites, maybe I'm no expert but once it's installed I can create and build nice websites.

                          Take a step back.

I think all of us can agree that yes you probably are experienced with creating Wordpress blogs.

However, there is a big difference in using that software and doing custom work like which you are suggesting.

I'm sorry, on behalf of the community, that there are people here that would rather criticize than help.

The thing is that it is not clear what you are asking.

Are you trying to take her existing design and convert it to a theme and then populate it with the pre-existing content?

Are you trying to just add a blog section to her new website?

It is not possible to simply move everything over and say yay it's now on Wordpress. For something to work on Wordpress it needs to be created to work on Wordpress. Meaning the design has to be integrated into a Wordpress theme.

It is possible to take an existing site and create a theme based off it's design but I have a feeling that it may be just a little bit out of your area of expertise. No offense, really. We all have our strengths and weaknesses.

For the sake of your friend's business, I recommend that you leave everything alone and hire an expert.

Hi, there is a link to her site above.

You will see there is no real design to it. It's just been slapped together (not her fault but her webmasters). There are many WP themes that will dance circles around it.

I see no reason she would want to save a non design. So, pick a killer WP theme and pop this thing out in under 2 hours and your done. Then put a Scotch on Ice and forget about it!

                            Hey mindgames,

"Are you trying to take her existing design and convert it to a theme and then populate it with the pre-existing content?"

Yes this is what I want to do. I would be installing the striking theme. Manually adding all the pages and adding her old content and images back into those pages. Then I will be showing her how to use the wordpress platform so she can change and add new content whenever she pleases.

                            Here's here site now http://roofdrainmarker.com/

and here's a quick design I made with the striking theme Test Logo | Practice time!

What I told her web guy to do is what another member here suggested, Install WP in a subfolder, give me the username and password to the wordpress backend, when I'm done building the site he will delete the old stuff and move your WP install to the root.

It really depends on how you want the WP site to be structured. But it should be a simple "copy & paste" process between the html version to the new WP version.

Have in mind that in WP pages are static while posts are not.

You could leave her site alone and just add a Blog menu option. And then install WordPress for her blog. But since the site is so small, probably better to just build it from scratch in WordPress. The main advantage of an html site is speed. So just be careful with adding plugins to WordPress as it's easy to bog down WordPress even further.

      Here's her site Home

My plan is to just rebuild the whole site for her using the striking theme. It will look better than what she has now.

She just wants to know what to tell her web guy, He doesn't know what to do. And all I want is a blank wordpress so I can go in and rebuild her site and help her with seo and teach her how to use wordpress so she doesn't have to rely on her web guy to make changes.

Yes, I agree with you that it can look better. If you can't design it yourself, you can hire someone here in the warrior forum to make a great design. When you get the design done, it's just a matter of copying and pasting all the text and images.

          1. Open the each web page <CTRL + A> (select all) <CTRL + C> (copy) and then open an instance of Microsoft word and <CTRL V> (paste) - so you paste each page into word x 4 ( You should then have four word docs for each page)

          2. Open the wordpress dashboard (/wp-admin) on the new site.

          3. Select 'Pages' / 'Add New'

          4. Select 'Alt' + 'Shift' + 'Z' (this will open up more editor options)

          5. Open the first word document that you pasted into earlier and again select <CTRL + A> and <CTRL +C>

          6. On the 'Add New' Page window in wordpress select the 'Paste from Word' icon you will see on the editor window.

          7. A pop up window will open with the title 'Paste from Word', place you mouse cursor in the text section of the pop up and peform <CTRL V>

Do step 7 for each of the four web pages from each of the four word documents.

Not perfect, but it will pick up the tables, text, images etc. You may have to swap themes a few times to find one that works well with what you have imported.

What would I need to do to accomplish this?

    1. Rename the site's index.html or home.html to something like index-BAK.html

    2. Install Wordpress either in the root directory or in a subdirectory.

Installation of Wordpress will not destroy any of the HTML files. However, it would still be a good idea to save the entire website to harddrive as a backup.

After that, find a good theme that meets her needs, then go through and configure Wordpress.

  • I'd make sure that the theme chosen has a good template for Wordpress Pages. Few of the "free" themes do, they're awful!

When you install wordpress you'll then need to create a Wordpress Page named "Home" and another named "Blog" (make sure there is NOTHING in this one except a title!) Then copy those URLs into their proper textboxes on the Settings/Reading page in Admin and save.

    My two cents on this:

If you don't already have something setup and ready to go, and if you have your own test / development server install wordpress there. Get the site setup and ready to your friends liking, once this is completed have her "web guy" remove the old site and put the new wordpress site in place.
This would be much better than going through third parties and messing around with a server you don't have access to while developing a site.

I would design the theme in Photoshop. Send it over to xhtmlchop.com to code it. (Just had them do 9 themes for me). Pay the $20 for them to install it and set it up. And be finished. Consdering this is a small job, it's around $150-200 for the whole package. Not bad if you ask me. Pretty much the same thing I did with a company I'm working with, did 90% of the work designing it how I wanted to and let them code the rest.

Convert the entire site to Wordpress, don't do half and half. Wordpress is so powerful. It will be easy for the client to make changes to ALL pages with wordpress later down the road as well.

(Also I don't work there or anything related, just had a positive and easy experience)
