How to increase the speed of your mozilla firefox by 500%

To increase the speed of your mozilla firefox browser this is just how I did mine:

Open firefox and type 'about:config' in the address bar
Alter this settings: network.dns.disableIPv6 set this to true
network.http.max-connections Set this to 100
network.http.max-connections-per server Set this to 100
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy Set this to 100
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server Set this to 100

100 is a random higher number I chose to ensure that firefox isn't waiting on the connections, especially on pages with many image hosts, avatars e.t.c.

A great little utility that I have used to make my FF run faster is

FireTune (http://www.totalidea.com/product.php?Product=FireTune)

I can't say its increased my FF's performance by 500%, but is nice and easy and I don't have to fiddle any config settings..

Worth checking out..

  funny you should post this but I did a few tweaks to my Firefox config just yesterday and boy what a difference. I also found out I was infected by the zsearch trojan...got rid of it too! So now my Firefox is blazing fast!

9 chances out of 10 if you're having an issue with your Internet browser, it's because of an issue with your connection/Ethernet port, virus/malware, or hardware performance.

Try doing some frequent cleanings, such as Internet and temp directories, removing unneeded start-up processes, and run a regular defrag.

Personally, I reformat my PC once a month.

I do a lot of environment testing on my PC... installing junk and uninstalling junk, constantly.

I've got 2 500gb hard drives on a disc array. They are partitioned in such a way that I've got all my OS files on one HD, while my paging file, installed apps and backups are on another. This way, I simply backup my registry and reformat my OS partition. Very little overhead, and makes the system run smooooth!

Suppose I could just run a virtual machine, but that would be too easy :p

also try this;

1
In the address bar, type "about:config" and press enter. Do not include quotation marks. Step2
In the filter field, type "network.http." Find the Boolean labeled "network.http.pipelining" and check its value. If the value is "false," double click this line to change it to "true." This will help reduce page loading time.
Step3
Find the Boolean labeled "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests." Double click this line and change the number to eight. The default number is four.
Step4
Find the Boolean labeled "network.http.proxy.pipelining." Double click this line to change the value to "true."
Step5
Enter "network.dns" in the filter field and find the Boolean labeled "network.dns.disableIPv6." Double click this line to set it to "true."
Step6
Right click anywhere in the window, select "new" and then "Boolean" from the menu. In the field that pops up, enter "content.interrupt.parsing." When prompted, set the value to "true." This allows your browser to interrupt page parsing, making it even more efficient.

Don't these kind of tools just take away the bandwidth that is allocating by your OS for important tasks like virus scanning etc.? If so, I wouldn't recommend using them.

  I tried the Fire Tune, and it has work wonders for me. Thanks a ton for the heads up. I would also agree that you will want to keep ad/spyware under control, and keep your PC cleaned up. But Also Try out the Fire Tune.

  You should backup the prefs.js file in your profile before making any changes. Find the file on an Windoz XP system here:
  C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\
  
  The prefs.js file is viewable with a standard text editor, and you can use SourceForge's WinMerge to look at the differences between files.

  You can use the FEBE plugin to backup your entire profile.

  I changed my prefs to the following as recommended by original post,
  
  user_pref("network.http.max-connections", 100);
  user_pref("network.http.max-connections-per-server", 50);
  user_pref("network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy", 50);
  user_pref("network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server", 50);
  
  But after running FireTune utility prefs were reset to the following,
  
  user_pref("network.http.max-connections", 48);
  user_pref("network.http.max-connections-per-server", 16);
  user_pref("network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy", 16);
  user_pref("network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server", 8);

Setting all those numbers that high are bound to get you banned by certain servers for too many connections at one time. Beware of the risks of using tweaks such as these.

Completely screwed up My Firefox ... After using these settings FF took ages to load (initial loading) plus web pages took forever or sometimes timedout ... I had to restore FF to its default settings and its working perfect now ... I wouldnt recommend these settings
