Hi Guys,

Looking for a little direction with a WP site.

I am about to start work on a large wedding magazine themed website using WP for a friend. The Site will bring tips and ideas for DIY Brides. I would really like to set this up correct first time around making correct use of pages, categories & tags.

My issue should i create many pages and sub pages to cover the main topic areas of the site?
(Reason i ask this is, I would like to remove the category slug in the url like site.com/category/tabletop-arrangements/) Getting a lot a conflicting inforamtion on the best approach to this.

Or go with categories for the related main pages.
The plan is that she will be able to just log into the CMS and create a post and either just click the correct category and tags if needed.

Example Parent Page : The Wedding Event
Example sub page: Venues
Example sub page: Vendors
Example sub page: Favors
Example sub page: Tabletops

Having a major brain fart on this one as i just went and created 48 pages including subs. I have created a mirror replica of categories 48 again.

Using the Genesis theme/framework if that helps. Should i no index the tags or categories or both? So that they will not end up outranking the content? Some folks here recommend different actions for this??

Your thought's help and tips are appreciated.

Instead of using subpages, create a well structured category list.
Create limited numbers of parent categories and then several child categories.

Use noindex for categories and tags initially. Once you have added a lot of content for each category and tag, make them visible in search engines (i.e. remove noindex ). Also display excerpt (instead of full post) in tags and category pages.

@arpitagarwal82, very good point. However, I don't understand the reason behind setting and unsetting, noindex. Can you explain that to me.

@dubhlinn, Wordpress documentation suggest that you use /%year%/%postname%/. So your url will look this way www.yousite.com/2012/your-blog-post/.

Also, the way I picture this is you having these categories in the navigation (I could be way off). However, it that is the case, then, when the authorized user logs in and creates or edits a post then they can assign it to the appropriate Wordpress Category. So when someone clicks on the Category that are now the menu links, the visitor to the site will see all of the posts associated with that particular category.

      Make sense?

    arpitagarwal82's suggestion is good.

Create each category and then drill down, for example.

    Category a
    related topic a1
    related topic a2
    etc

    Category b
    related topic b1
    related topic b2
    etc

    Category c
    related topic c1
    related topic c2
    etc

Make sure that each page/post is only listed in 1 category, no more.

Also, assuming that you want your site to be more long term, don't use the /%year%/ in the permalinks.

Every well organized content (read: properly categorized content) in WP is - by default - the closest thing to a silo structure as it can be.

Just need to remove the link "leakage" from it and you are good to go.

People just like to over-complicate and mystify the simple concepts
