    Fantastico install?
I don't think it is able to install it on subdomains...
    Try a manual install.

I guess simplescript works in similar way.

Did the script let you define the installation location as a "subdomain"? I don't think so...

All those scripts are able to install it either in the root (example.com) or in a subfolder (example.com/something). Never seen the option to type in a subdomain for the installation.

Do yourself a favour and learn the 5-minutes manual install: you will never touch again those 'automated' things

Can you bring a link to see it? I've installed WP in subdomains without any problems - even via fantastico/softalicious.

you can use fantastico to install in a subdomain. I did it a few days ago.
on a hostgator server the subdomains are listed in the drop down.
I have about 15 of them on my server. Use to test before a site goes live.

I would ftp in and look around, something may have happened.
    Look at the .htaccess
Look at the database and see if ooption table has the proper site url.

You must be doing something wrong. Maybe, the file permissions for the files are set to deny visitors. Fantastico and Quick Install can set up a WP in folders as well as sub-domains.
