I live in California and doing small freelance work for web design/SEO services when I'm not at work for my full-time job.

What I researched and didn't find much info on was how do I pay taxes? Is there a sales tax in California for services such as web design and SEO services?

I found a great way to manage invoices and tax estimations with the Freshbooks and Outright combo but does anyone know how to actually go through the motions of paying taxes for a web design/SEO freelancer?

You would pay taxes the same way as any other self-employed contractor. Any income you earn is reportable if over a certain amount ($600 last time I checked). If you use a program such as Turbotax it will walk you through how to pay self employment taxes, which can be done as part of your regular tax filing.

This is exactly why you don't get tax or legal advice from a forum.

ALL income is 'reportable', no exceptions, no exclusions, no thresholds.

OP - check with your local Chamber of Commerce, they may have information on startups. Most counties have business information, and occasionally you find sources of startup grants or cheap loans from city or county business development agencies.

There are actually two issues here:

    1. Do you need to pay sales tax on your services? Every state has different rules, and in some states web design is subject to sales tax. You need to check with the state you live in AND every state that you provide services in.

    2. Income tax - all income is reportable in the US. You need to learn about self employment tax, estimated tax payments, what expenses you can deduct, etc.

SteveJohnson said it best - don't get tax advice from a forum. You need to find a qualified tax professional who knows the rules and can help you with your own unique situation.
