Need advice on Forum software/script

I have a client that wants to set up a Paid Membership forum... This eventually will hopefully be a large medical site/forum with only paid subscriptions... similar to askme.com only very niche specific... as far as setting this all up, does anyone have any suggestions as to what scripts to use... My client was hoping to find some free alternatives and would rather not invest any large sums of money at this time.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

Thanx

There are a number of possible solutions, a free one could be put together as follows:

    Joomla to perform content management
AEC to manage subscriptions and payments
    JACL to define user rights
Community Builder to provide community features for your users
    FireBoard as the Forum software

I have used this combination a number of times, it's stable and reliable as well as easy to maintain. Please let me know if you need any help with this.

    Aloha

    Thanx Bill for your reply...

I already have their site set up on an older version of Joomla. (1.0.x) which I really should update but... I was also already looking at some Joomla extensions and looking for FireBoard but it seems that has now become Kunena which looks promising... I looked at AEC and that looks good too... Reviews of JACL weren't very good but since the site is on an older version, that may work out also and be better for me than the 1.5 users...

My concern is, where my client is going to take this... she has BIG plans/ideas and will be looking to add on other doctors etc... (so she says)... and I'm afraid that this might need to be a stand alone site somewhere down the road...

Using her current Joomla site and adding components would really be nice and make my life easier and your suggestions are worthy ones... especially since they're all free... I'm gonna have to sit my client down and get a better picture of what she wants to accomplish and do... as it stands now, Joomla seems to be the way to go...

Thanx for your offer of help... I just may take you up on it! =)

Joomla can scale to become a pretty large site so it should be able to handle your clients need in the future. As they already have a Joomla site they are probably familiar with administrating it, so adding the forum and membership components to Joomla would make for an easier learning curve.

I've set this up on Joomla 1.0 many times with the previously mentioned components, but as you pointed out there are other components worthy of consideration. Most are open source so they satisfy the requirements for creating allow cost solution.

I'd be happy to help you with this, let me know if you need assistance.

I have to agree with bwj292. V bulletin is a really good choice. Good luck.
