Hi guys /gals,
I feel like I'm stuck when it comes to word press.
I can build basic html sites fine. (although I'm clueless about CSS).
It seems like word press should be easy and it just might be but I can't seem to figure it out. I know I can install it from within my web host control panel and I have done this. But after that, what? I see these pretty nice sites built on word press but I just can't figure it out.
Am I missing something?
Thanks,
-Jeff

It is the same with anything else the more you try it the more you learn. Just keep trying new themes and plugins, swap things around until you are happy.

Go to Wordpress.org and click on themes. There are probably more than 1000. You can also search free wordpress themes. There are lots more. Knowing HTML will help but WP can still be tricky. I've put off learning it for too long and began just a week ago. It's coming along pretty well. You'll find tons of great videos on Youtube. That's what has saved me. There's a video for just about every challenge. And here's a suggestion.

Once you've figured something out, keep a log and record what you did. That will save you from having to hunt around for the procedure later on after you've forgotten exactly how you did something tricky.

Another thing. If you have to change any code, be sure to first grab the original and save it. That way if you change something that doesn't end up working out you can put it back the way is was. Good luck.

    Hi Jeff

We design Wordpress sites all the time (currently have 15 under development).

If you have basic HTML and CSS skills, I would recommend a theme called Catalyst.

Catalysttheme.com. When you purchase this and get the free add-on called Dynamic, this allows you to build almost anything inside of Wordpress.

You will also get the Catalyst Cheat Sheet at the time of purchase. this is like 100 pages of instruction manual that holds your hand and teaches you about online marketing AND how to use Catalyst to build cool websites.

You can get away without the HTML, but using CSS allows you to really do some cool text work and build a powerful site.

If your CSS is not that great, you can start with the basic stuff and they also have a bunch of free :Child Themes" you can import into your site that will change many of the settings and give you a cool look.

    Hope that helps you out.

    Good Luck.

It sounds like you need some video instruction to take you through all the basics. I have learned a huge amount about WP from these videos in only 3 months part-time. You are welcome to grab them anytime. They are brilliant and really easy to follow.

    I hope this helps.

    Best Wishes

I have found, not all themes work effectively. So if you try to preview a theme with your site and it does not show up properly there are bugs in that theme and voided.
