I'm moving a site that's PR 3 to a brand new domain. is there a good guide to do something like this while keeping all the SEO benefits?

Wonder how google would recognize the new site.

Thanks

I don't know of any specific guides, but a good place to start would be researching 301 redirection of pages from your old domain to your new one. This will certainly help with google discovering the new site and you 'should' eventually have your PR transferred too!
    Good luck!

Will the old domain still be active and if so for how long?

Doing the 301 redirects as stated above is a good way to get started. If you are moving the site and plan on have the exact same structure, I would use a number of 301's to get each page to do a redirect to the new page in case you have links coming in from other sites you don't have control of and they point to a sub page instead of your home page.

    Good Luck!

I can have the old domain up indefinitely. I gather it should be up so I can do the redirects.

So a 301 redirect will help us to gain the SEO benefits from the old site to the new site?

Read this article, you will know what you should do.
Moving your site - Webmaster Tools Help

Not only a 301 redirection from old pages to new pages is enough. You should also keep your old domain up for some time. With that use the Google webmaster tools to notify Google of your new domain.

It sounds like I should do a page-to-page 301 direct.

If I understand this correctly, I would have to do this manually for each page. Oldsite.com/post1 would have to point to Newsite.com/post1.
