Back awhile ago I made a custom 404 page. I was just reading that a 404 page with a 200ok can be bad for rankings. It could cause duplicate content. Is this true?

I think it might be bad if you had too many 404 pages. Google however does know when it passes a 404 error page so it would be deindexed.

YES, it is a good idea.

    Why?

Because it gives good feedback to your visitor, you have a chance to suggest they visit another one of (hopefully related) page on your site.

Because it shows you care about the details, enhancing your branding.

Because Web citizens have low attention span, so if the're gone they might be gone forever.

    Good luck!

Standard 404 Pages are a mistake. Make a custom one if you have the ability to. If you are worried about rankings, just make sure it is not a dynamic 404 page, use a static one with some basic information, maybe a contact form with some prefilled hidden inputs so you know how people ended up there, etc.

However, a 404 tells people that content doesn't exist there at all. Once a user hits it, 90% of the time they will stop looking for that content on your site, or possibly at all. If you have a custom 404 you can inform them that while they were looking for something important that they didn't find, it might still exist at this link over here or this other lead link over here.

I think it helps users to not think badly of your site. It's not nessisary, but if a user comes upon a bland 404 page, he might think that your site is untrustworthy or unreliable. But i wouldnt worry too much about it.

    Hi,
I agree with everyone above, that it is good for your users that you have custom 404 page. But, google as well tend to give you some extra points for having 404 page.
So, that is the way to go.
