I need help deciding which is better the word blog before the url or after

Can you tell me which format is better for a blog?
blog.mycompanyname.com or mycompanyname.com/blog and what is the difference?

I am currently using the latter but my webmaster says I should use the blog.mycompanyname.com. He would redirect traffic from the current one to that.

Is there any reason to do this or not?

    What was the reason he gave you? Was it for SEO purposes, or for server/administration/script purposes?

    Because unless you want the opportunity to do something cool or unique (ex: lab.nochek.net instead of nochek.net/work/ ) with it, there isn't much point. Google, Bing, and Yahoo all index sub folder and sub domains the same based upon their top level domains, and the other search engines really shouldn't matter to you.

      Dear Nochek,

      That was my feeling too. he tried to convince me it was for SEO purposes but because he is redesigning a website of one of my client's he told her it was better the blog.mydomain.com way. Does this mean the blog is not uploaded to the site? We are transferring the site to Volusion platform and I get the feeling it is because he does not want to build the module. But not being a "techie" I don't know that for a fact. I want to make the best recommendation for my client. BTW, I do the site copywriting for her.

        When making subdomains, you can point them anywhere. So if your current blog is at mydomain.com/blog/, its a just a CNAME change to make blog.mydomain.com direct the user to mydomain.com/blog/. The /blog/ directory will still be there, and you can have any subdomain point to that directory. (letter.mydomain.com, post.mydomain.com, etc can all be directed towards mydomain.com/blog/, or even yourdomain.com/blog/). So you wouldn't even need to host the blog on the server, you could keep it on a completely separate box on free-shared hosting and just CNAME straight too it.

        As to what would be best practices as far as system use, resources, and user interaction, that is all entirely dependant upon localized factors (that particular website, server variables, what type of customers, etc). If your guy is in charge of all of that, he might know something I don't, so could very well be giving you good advice.

        That being said, One thing that is very important is current traffic. Is this site already built, and is the blog already getting ranked traffic? Because switching to a subdomain at that point could very well do much more harm than potential good.

    I prefer the word blog at the end. I think it is easier for someone to remember your web pages if they remember the domain name with blog or whatever else you name your pages are called.

    blog.example.com = subdomain
    example.com/blog = subfolder

    Actually, G. treats example.com and blog.example.com as two separate sites, while the subfolder is always part of the main site!
