Battling to install a theme

I have just installed WP on a new blog of mine and regardless of which theme I try and install, the install fails because it says the style.css file is missing.

I have checked the files and it does exist. Please could someone guide me here?

Thanks
Di

  • Hi Di
Are you installing the theme zipped and via the WP dashboard?

If you are, try unzipping it on your computer and upload it manually to the themes folder. This often resolves any glitches.

First, make sure you've deleted the original installations.

  • Sometimes that happens when the Theme files are not exactly below their folder.

    Examples: (OK)
    wp-content/themes/twentyeleven/(files)

    Examples (WRONG)
    wp-content/themes/templateAZ/templateAZ/(files)

Let me know if it makes sense, blessings.

    • Unzip the folder you are installing and see if there is another file in there zipped up that looks like the theme. This has happened to me before, I wasn't paying attention and installed the wrong .zip file.
  • Ernestrategos seems to have diagnosed your problem correctly. If the theme ZIP files are not properly archived, you will have the theme files inside a sub-folder of the theme folder. WordPress scans the theme folder for template files. So it fails to locate it.
  • Thanks guys and Anne,

I tried all of your suggestions and when I log in, the theme is not available to activate.

    Going to keep trying.

    • Are you trying to install a mobile theme?

Then you probably didn't purchase WP themes but mobile HTML5 templates.

There are some mobile WP themes, but the majority is still coded in HTML5.

You can try (you will need a basic HTML understanding) to edit it without the WP CMS with Firefox and Firebug and another program that actually let you save the changes.
  • If you give us screenshots (error message, folder structure, template name) we might be able to diagnose,

    Good luck
  • Uhm .... I discovered my problem and I feel like SUCH AN IDIOT

It's a plugin and I was trying to install it as a theme.

    Sigh ............................

Thank you anyway for all of your help. Really appreciate it.

  • Your sure not the only one who's done things like that, I've lost count how many DUH! moments I've had over the years
  • A pleasure, and no worries, great you could figure it out
