Is it possible to add a database for clients....

Hello,

Someone close to me had hired a webmaster to build a site and .... nothing!! He got sc..wed!!

I can set up the basic site with wordpress but what he also wants to have is a (please excuse me if I don't use the correct term) secure database where each client will have access with their unique password to get access to different proprietary/sensitive documents such as contracts, estimates etc. Can this be added to a wordpress-based website? If so - can anyone tell me where I can get the info to do this? If not - can you make suggestions?

I believe that the web-hosting needs to provide SFTP, SSL ..... what else?

Thank you,
Sandra

P.S. I will post this same question in the techie-talk area because I think it overlaps
#website design #add #clients #database #secure
  • I don't think Wordpress can really be used for uploading, or storing documents. Some one please correct me if I am wrong. Wordpress is more a Content Management, or posting content on the site.

Although you could upload and make documents downloadable.

You might want to check out something like Joomla, might be more useful.

If it's going to be a collaboration, some thing like Google Docs, could be the best route.

    • Thanks so much for the suggestions!!! I have not yet used Joomla nor Google Docs - I'll start by looking at that. I had no idea where to start looking. In the worst case, if I can't do it myself, after doing the research I will know what to ask of a web designer or a programmer.

      Thank you!!
  • You could do it with wordpress but I don't know of anything out of the box it would probably be something that should be custom coded. If you are talking beyond the design of the page and talking about databases and security you should really be talking to a programmer not a web designer.

    • Looking at your answer: you are right that it is more of a programming topic but if there were a way to do this under wordpress I know that you web designers would know how to make it work. There are so many options in wordpress and so many plugins that the common mortals like myself can't pretend to fathom the possibilities.

      Thanks for your response!!
  • Obviously, you can set up users at certain levels with Wordpress, but I don't think you can make it so each person has their own individual "area". Maybe it's possible, but I've never seen it.

I still think Google Docs, or something that works in that way might be a better option. Just seems like it's exactly the system your client is looking for.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • It's going to be the 'worst case' - this isn't something you can do yourself if you don't have a good idea how already.

You can probably use WordPress, but it's going to have to be done by someone who knows how the roles/capabilities section of WP works, and also knows how to handle secure downloading (downloads need to be dispensed by the server rather than be in the server filesystem and accessible by URL).

    • Oh I agree with you that it will not be easy for me to do it BUT if I know what is out there, what the different possibilities are with their advantages and shortcomings I will be better equipped to ask someone to develop it for me and actually get the service I need.

What he needs is pretty simple (turns out that he only needs for the clients to be able to read and download their documents) but it does need to be secure - if I understand correctly sftp and https will have to be used in this process. I need to see if googledocs provides a secure environment.

Thank you very much for your help
