    You should make a sub domain for your site then upload Wordpress to it.

    You might be better using WPMU.
    You basically change a few parameters in a normal Wordpress installation then it will allow you to create multiple WP installations either in a sub directory or in a sub domain. Each WP installation you create can then operate autonomously from the rest, so it has its own theme, plugins etc.

    You can also use a domain mapping plugin, so that each of your WP sites can have their own domain name associated with them.
    Here's a link to the official WP Codex for setting up the network. It takes 10 minutes to setup. Create A Network « WordPress Codex

    Who is your hosting provider?

    You have 2 options:

    install in a sub-directory or use addon domains. Both will work and won't cost anything extra.

        to add to the original questions,

        lets say i install openCart for my main domain, then Wordpress in a subfolder and later decided to make wordpress site my main site, I know i have to edit somehow the .htaccess file or copy over that file, but any recommendation as to the best steps to go about doing that?

        Thank you for your help in advance

    BEFORE asking any WP questions... read the Codex: all of them are answered there - Main Page « WordPress Codex

      I have done all the reading i can, and have been at it for 2.5 months without asking 1 question but cant find the specific scenario I am in. This why i am asking on the forum.

      It is a very specific scenario, if you believe it is covered in the codex and i did not manage to find it, please point it out and prove me wrong, otherwise your suggestion is useless to me.

      i know i need to move the wordpress document i created in a sub folder under public_html, but i could not understand exactly how to edit the .htaccess file, or if i should copy it over etc... if someone has a quick answer it will save me from more research and possibly doing mistakes on my live site that i could actually avoid.

      Thank you in advance for your constructive response.

        a) best thing is to not add your question to another topic but start your specific question!
        b) don't start your question with "I know..." - you know it wrong: moving/copying over the htacces file is the last move

        For this scenario you have 2 [two] solutions described in the WP manual:
        - physically move your WP install from a subdir to the root:
        Moving WordPress « WordPress Codex
        - leave the files where they are and move up only the index and htaccess (do NOT move only but copy = have it on both places!)
        Giving WordPress Its Own Directory « WordPress Codex

        If you ask me - for your case it would be way easier to use the second solution, i.e. giving WP its own directory...

        You ARE wrong. See above - you have two solutions for your "specific scenario"...

        1. There is no "wordpress document", FYI;
        2. moving a folder or files has NOTHING to do with editing another file (.htaccess)
        3. if it is writable, WP, usually, edits the htaccess file, don't get stressed out about it;
        4. There are very clear, detailed instructions what to do with the files
        5. Edit ALWAYS means opening the file in a simple text editor, like Notepad or PSPad and editing it just as you type here...
