redesigning a 14 year old website ranking #1 for main search term

I have a client who wants me to redesign the layout of his website that is 14 years old. He is sitting at #1 for his main keyword and some others.

His site was made in MS publisher and looks like absolute ****...It needs a complete makeover.

I have never redesigned a site this old. This design, and content is 14 years old. I'm going to keep all of the original content, no doubt.

Do you guys have any tips? The last thing I want to happen, is redesign the site, get it looking good and suddenly screw the rankings up. The pure age of the domain has made the site an authority site to the big G. It''s not even close to optimized lol.

    I would love to hear from this vibrant community about your question. Last year I completely moved my site to wordpress. I got a plugin to add an htm extension to all the pages. My rankings went way down. Now, I'm not sure if it's the Panda thing or that. Just saying. Try to do keep all the content intact with all the meta. I think I messed around too much with my.

    The last thing you want to happen is to cause your client to lose his rankings, especially if we are talking about money keyword phrases.

    Again, it maybe something completely different for my site. SEOmoz pro is showing me a lot of duplicate titles, content, and 404 pages. Big G doesn't like that. And I have not been doing a good job keep my content fresh. Having said that, I have a lot of work to be done to correct all the mistakes and errors. Right now, I am looking for someone to do the work for me.
