Wordpress: Using private page as homepage

Heya folks!

I just put in a new WP-powered site. The theme I'm using puts links to all the Pages across the top of the blog, which is good.

However, I'd like to use a static Page for the homepage of the site.

The problem is that all Pages then turn up in the menu at the top.

I thought the solution might be to mark it as "Private" prior to publishing.

But, then, if I do that, the page title is preceded by "Private: [title of content here]" which I obviously don't want.

I'm pretty sure this is nothing to do with the theme. It seems to be more of a hardcoded WP issue.

Can anyone tell me how to remove this "Private:" prefix?

And if I do, will it also remove the "Private" marker/tag in the Manage Pages menu?

Thanks very much. I greatly appreciate your help.

P.S.
Maybe I'm going about something the wrong way and this "Private" thing is not really my issue at all. Is there a simpler way to set a post or page as the homepage? (There doesn't seem to be a way to set a Post as the homepage).

  • In the settings section, go to "reading" and then at the top, under the section entitled "front page displays", you can choose static page, select the page and have the relevant post on it.

To avoid showing all your pages on your top menu, the "exclude pages" plugin WordPress › Exclude Pages WordPress Plugins should help you there. You just install and activate the plugin, and there's a check box that says "include this page in user menus" - uncheck this box and the relevant page isn't listed on your top menu.

Hope this is of some help.

  • Using a plugin to remove pages from page list is not the most efficient way of controlling your menubar. Ideally, you should be making use of the "Menu" functionality of WordPress. It gives you complete control without need for any plugin.
