Wordpress: Using private page as homepage

Heya folks!
I just put in a new WP-powered site. The theme I'm using puts links to all the Pages across the top of the blog, which is good.
However, I'd like to use a static Page for the homepage of the site.
The problem is that all Pages then turn up in the menu at the top.
I thought the solution might be to mark it as "Private" prior to publishing.
But, then, if I do that, the page title is preceded by "Private: [title of content here]" which I obviously don't want.
I'm pretty sure this is nothing to do with the theme. It seems to be more of a hardcoded WP issue.
Can anyone tell me how to remove this "Private:" prefix?
And if I do, will it also remove the "Private" marker/tag in the Manage Pages menu?
Thanks very much. I greatly appreciate your help.

P.S. Maybe I'm going about something the wrong way and this "Private" thing is not really my issue at all. Is there a simpler way to set a post or page as the homepage? (There doesn't seem to be a way to set a Post as the homepage).
