Hey guys,

Just joined here, and was hoping that someone could help me out with a problem I have.

We are having our website redesigned, and as part of that redesign, we have written a lot of articles about the various topics relating to our site.

We want to add these new pages (obviously staggering the upload), but I am unsure as to whether we should create an "articles" page and locate them all there?

Our site is e-commerce, and we don't really want the articles to detract too much from customers making a purchase.

My plan was for us to have an "articles" link in the sitemap at the bottom of the homepage, which could then open a page with a full list of all the articles we have created. Then when the customer clicks on one of those links, they are shown the article.

Would this work? And would the articles receive recognition from google if they are uploaded in this way? (assuming I add them to xml sitemap and link them to other pages on the site)

The other option I was considering was having some drop down buttons on the homepage, below the main content, and putting the links there. However, I was worried that google might think this is spammy, since most of the articles do contain variants of similar keywords.

I just really want some help to know whether having about 40 links to articles in drop down menus would be detremenal in googles view of my homepage? And whether it is best to create the articles page and just keep uploading the new content to there?

Sorry for my confusing post

Thanks in advance to anyone kind enough to reply

Personally, I would do one of two things:

    1. Create a blog and attach it to your main website (yourwebsite.com/blog). This would provide your customers with an opportunity to interact with you via comments.
    2. Create a page called Articles, accessed from a link on your main website, and use that page as an article index list with hyperlinks to the articles.

Either option would be embraced by Google and will help towards your site being recognized as an authority site.

Thanks a lot Annie, really appreciate your advice

I think I will go with option 2 for now, and then consider incorporating a blog at a later date.

Thanks once again for the speedy reply

Exactly what annie said. You need to make a blog.

If your using wordpress, depending on the theme, make a new page. Label that page as "blog" in the title. On the right side corner it will ask your "template function" click and scroll down to "blog". When you want to customize things to be underneath one another, click "parent pages" if it has this function.

Each theme is different, the one I used is free for woothemes. It should be the same concept though even if it is a different theme your using.

Thanks for your answer also James.

I would prefer to go down the articles page route for now, since our product deals with a very sensitive subject matter, and we discovered quite some time ago that people don't really want to openly discuss this topic unfortunately.

Do you think there is any disadvantage in using the articles page over using the blog?

I was thinking along the lines that with a blog, it is more like a series of posts. Whereas with the articles page, we will be able to do some onsite optimization for each page, and hence perhaps more chance of doing better for these keywords in the search engines? The other reason was that a blog would be a single page and if we have 40 extra pages from our site through the articles page, we would appear as more of an authority site in the eyes of google?

Just my thoughts, maybe I am way off here. Please correct me if I am wrong, I am new here, and trying to learn fast
