Hi Guys,

Sorry for the over dramatic title, I really want some professional opinions on the new website I've done for my web design company before I SEO it.

Be honest, I really don't mind people telling me the truth:

Caffeine19

Cheers,

Dougie

Why is it all on one page? there is no benefit to this and it is slow loading for people with bad internet. Also inline styling is bad.

I understand the scrolling is neat. I do. The only thing here is when someone like myself sees a scrollbar, they will scroll down.

When I scroll down to see your content, there is so much blank space, and it just isn't as appealing as it could be if you just had your scrolling effect in play without having all the content on the homepage.

The site looks nice but I definitely do not like that it's all put into a single page. This can slow your load time a bit and lead to not only a bad user experience, but can make it a bit harder to rank well in Google, especially in a field like web design as Google does take load time into account as a factor (a small factor, but a factor none the less).

You may also want to try the site usertesting.com, they charge around $40 but you'll get a full video review of your site and a ton of useful feedback from a third party.

I personally feel the BIG LOUD BLUE VIDEO is a bit loud.

But thats just me, other than that. Its a bit sketchy.

I would prefer a more traditional layout.

Again, its just a personal thing.

    Decent site.

I think it looks good. Review and edit your content though. As an example:

Dougie started in the wonderful world of web design back in 2004 where he developed websites for friends, family and his own maths tutoring business ...

It should be when, not where. And then you will have a to change a few words after that as well. I did not read everything, by any means, but I scanned a few sentences and things like that jumped out at me.

Also, forget the family and friends stuff. You are trying to sell yourself, so you can definitely talk about having design experience that extends back in time, but there is no need to tell a potential client that you work for free, as you do for family and friends.

They were clients too ... you just gave them the family and friends pricing plan. And what you charged a client in the past is not the business of a potential client today.

Your programming skills look up to par, but make sure your wording stands out with the same professionalism. Not trying to nitpick, but words are important and little things like that will cost you customers.

Go reread every word on your site and make sure there are not grammatical errors.

Words are important. People would be surprised how little things like that can cost you a sale and give it to a competitor of yours.

One more thing. In addition to the wording, remove the elements where you are selling yourself short. On the page I pulled the above quote from, you are telling everyone to NOT hire your services for Adobe Illustrator. Get rid of the since 2004 stuff for the elements of design for which you feel yourself highly skilled. Your skills and service may be every bit as good as somebody that started in 2001, but if you try to convince your potential client that it matters whether or not you began in 2004 or, say 2001, you are only convincing them to look for a designer that says they began before you did.

Honesty and integrity are important. Let those qualities guide your work ethic and interactions with clients, but there is absolutely no need to tell people that there might be things that you cannot do for them. It will only create doubt in potential clients minds and drive them and their money off of your site and onto a competitors.

There are plenty of folks on the net that have excellent writing skills, are in your same startup boat and will review/edit/create quality content for a pretty low price.

I like your company name, btw.

          Hi Christopher,

I can't thank you enough for the time you have taken to review my site and give me feedback.

I will remove those areas on the about page and update the text as you said.

          Again many thanks,

          Dougie

It looks great, while the big-size picture is not a good choice for a new site(it is not SEO friendly for search engine). Usually some big sites, like Apple, HTC homepage may take this kind of design.

The theme used on your website is great but with a little customization you can make that theme even better. For example you have to much space just for the "Follow Us" section and maybe you can write more detailed descriptions for your services.Anyway it's a good website.

I really like how you added the video to the Wordpres Hypax theme. I run a web design company.. (In Canada, so no competition!), and after viewing your site I definitely see the value in having that video right there, it is so captivating!

If I may ask where did you get the video done?

Great site! I am sure you will have success.

No worries Dougie. You have a pretty good attitude about it and asking for critiques. That is smart. The crappy part about the making money with your computer thing is realizing that you have to sell yourself, which doesn't come naturally to some, myself included. But that is the reality of this adventure if you want success.

You don't need to BS people or lie, just be confident. Think about the words you use and the message you convey with them and where your words might leave an opportunity for some doubt to creep into a potential clients mind. For ideas, if you get stuck, just look at other designer's sites and how they describe themselves and their services.

You are many steps further along in your adventure than a lot of folks on this site are.

      Best of luck to you.
