Just how important is having a sitemap and linking it to your Google Webmaster Tools Account?

A sitemap is a MUST. Linking it to Google Webmasters Tool is not necessary.

It's a must.

Google will use it to spider all your pages, in turn getting them indexed faster i find.

  The search engines can get an easier indication using a site map and linking it to that page. Depending on how you design the sitemap may benefit the search engines on-line, users only or both.
  
  Look at your competing sites and just look to see if they are using them, depending on what it is, you will often find that most sites do have sitemaps!

A site map sitemap is a list of pages of a web site accessible to crawlers or users. It can be either a document in any form used as a planning tool for web design, or a web page that lists the pages on a web site, typically organized in hierarchical fashion. This helps visitors and search engine bots find pages on the site. so it is useful for user in traversing the website easily. If we upload a sitemap.xml to the tool server then search engine's boat can also traverse your website easily. Linking to webmaster account is of great worth.

It's not a mandatory thing to do, but it's a recommended thing. If we submit a xml sitemap to the google webmaster tools, then the google crawlers can easily know our website and its pages. So, that crawlers can do it's duty more effectively.

  There's really no downside to using a sitemap. It's great for SEO value and is free. So there's only positive outcomes to be expected.

  Why not have one, though? It's not like it costs money or anything. You're getting free SEO value. That's never a bad thing.

Sitemaps was really important back in the days when Google used them to crawl your site faster.
Now it is more used for statistics indexed over un-indexed pages.

I agree. If your site is well designed where the search engines can easily crawl all of your content, you don't need one. I don't believe that there is ANY SEO benefit to a sitemap. I don't have one on my main site and google crawls and indexes it all easily. But maybe I'm wrong.
