Hello, I am trying to setup a social network for my city but am having trouble finding a good engine to do it with. I've been looking into SocialEngine but have seen mixed reviews on how it performs after signing up a certain level of users.

Also, I have been trying to upload the socialengine in my FTP like in their tutorial but its taking ages to do so. 7,000 files need to be uploaded and so far after about 30 minutes only 114 are with 16 failed transfers.

Do you have any good suggestions? Thanks guys

What are the limitations on this compared to other social networks?

It has the fewest limitations in one sense because it is open source and free.

It does all the basics that Facebook does. The only notable missing feature I can think of off the top of my head is live chat.

Is there anything particularly unique that you're looking for?

first take a note of all those limitations which come out in ypur way and then try to rectify them one by one, i recommend you to buy a awesome internet connection with free downloads and try to use licensed software because your concept is too good too implement so give your concept a good legal start and it will surely will safe and rocking.

If you're using BuddyPress don't forget to take a look at the plugins section of the BuddyPress site. Pretty sure there was a chat plugin available at one point.

    The missing items: chat
Well, you can try to use a chat by "RumbleTalk", you can design your own chat theme
and chatters can login with their facebook or twitter account.
