Hello fellow warriors,

I dont know much about webdesign or IM, hell I'm just now putting up my first 2 websites at age 35. But it seems to me that, I see wordpress sites everywhere. Please let me know if I'm wrong, it very well could be that all this SEO stuff is making all the sites look the same template wise. I'm also not saying wordpress is bad. LOL, with out it I would not even have sites up, since I don't know html. I just wanted some of your thoughts about it. Hope that makes since to most of you.

WordPress websites can look like anything you want them to. You've likely been on WordPress websites without realizing it - whereas other sites are obviously WP because they use the standard theme.

There's really no such thing as 'overusing WordPress'. No question some of the themes are overused, but WP is simply an easy and convenient way to generate web sites/pages.

I'm very comfortable using HTML/CSS, but I prefer WP for many reasons, not the least of which is the extensive plugin library that allows you to quickly and easily add additional functionality to your website. WP is also very search engine friendly out of the box. It's much easier to generate SEO-friendly URLs, Titles, Descriptions, etc.. with WP than it is with HTML/CSS - or at least it's much faster.

My advice is stick with WP, learn all you can, and you'll be glad you did.

WordPress is only the CMS, if you want an original site then you have to go for an original design.

From my point of view WordPress is the best and that's why is used by all.

Not used by all, depends on what type of site you want, wp is not the be all and end all.

There are diffarent cms that would better sute some types of sites.

      ^^ This.

Wordpress is an awesome machine, but definitely NOT the best options for "some" sites. Truth be told, for IM'ers and "normal" corporate sites it's the best option right now.

People make good money selling to the rich. But the rich got rich selling to the masses.

Maybe to a purist...but not in the real world.

Back in the day, business owners had to hire web designers for the design, as well as for each little change that needed to be made, even if it was just to update an email address.

Today, real web design is still about the design, but it's also about providing a web solution to business owners so they can have more control over their web presence.

I sell web design as a larger one-time fee for the benefit of control and minimal expenses long-term. Clients seem to be responsive.

I am probably the only person on these forums who doesn't like or use WordPress.

I understand why people with no web development knowledge use WordPress. The one click install and cheap/free themes makes it ideal for people with zero web knowledge to vomit out a bunch of niche sites quickly.

If you actually spend some time and look you can find some decent themes, just make sure not to use any of the ones you find from google searches, there is lots of malware in 90% of them.

I owned a small design company / website development company for years. Wordpress is an excellent option for site development. It's worth spending a little money and time on a custom design. I'd steer away from all the standard templates unless it's just a small personal site.

The ease of updating static pages, and the ease of integrating a blog, makes WP a great choice. Plus, there are a TON of WP developers out there for hire to do custom work.

BTW -- We were doing sites back when we were using first version of Front Page and the one that came with Netscape (maybe called Navigator?). Then DreamWeaver. Eventually hired real programmers to do completely custom sites. Those were the days. We eventually tried several CMS systems and were in the process of moving over to django when we closed.

      That would be Netscape Composer.

Navigator was Netscape's browser. I liked them both.
