Theme overload

Hi All,

I'm a newbie setting up first website and have got a bit of information overload on themes. Been advised not to go with a free theme you can just google as often have bad/spammy coding. My intentions are to build an authority site so assuming success really need some flexibility for the future as the sites grows over time. I will be affilliate marketing. Also I want an all in one where i can create squeeze page as well. what are my best options?

My alternative thoughts are to get a theme and if site is succesful and growing as I hope introducing more products etc just pay a developer to adjust as and and when the site is expanding into new niches.

Your thoughts would be most helpful?

  • I quickly created a tutorial that shows how to remove the crap coding that is done to WP themes by the people that bring you them for free.

It wouldn't let me post the tutorial as a post, so I had to make it a PDF and attach it.

It is a simple process really, and, if you ever goof it up and break a theme you can always download it again for another try.

If it doesn't make sense let me know.

  • Definitely stay away from free themes. They often contain terrible code structures and will, most times, either slow down your website or kill your website in Google's eyes.

For themes, I've always found my best success to come from Thesis. You do have to design the theme on your own (or, if you're really desperate, you can buy a skin), but you get total customization. If Thesis isn't for you, Headway is a great theme for those who are a bit less code-oriented.

  • FREE themes are not always BAD. Pirated copies of paid themes do contain malicious codes. Try for free themes from trusted sources like WordPress › Free WordPress Themes. Some free themes are even better than paid themes, which need not always be high-quality.
  • @Jay Your welcome, happy too.

@WebsiteBegin Free themes are not all badly coded, a lot of them are put out by the makers of pay to use themes. Which reminds me to point out that only links to ipod, email, and other BS sites should be removed. Links to the creators sites should always be left in the theme, giving credit where credit is due.

I've paid hundreds for WP themes, and, I have used a lot of free themes, some I have made adjustments to the coding, some I have not. I haven't had issues with themes loading slow for any of them.

    • I was saying that, generally, most free themes aren't great for your website. It's just a fact of life And that's the one downside - you have to retain credit. You never will have complete control.
  • I am disagree with lot of guys. Infact there is lot of good themes are available that is working fine with wordpress and Each Premium Seller like templatic, woo, rocket themes ..etc are providing atleast a free themes which is really works fine.

Wordpress is good CMS for newbie also it has lot of free plugins if you need any help then just search videos on youtube or wordpress.tv you will get lot of free videos for first website.
  • If you need an 'All-In-One', look for a theme that has a range of page templates out of the box, including squeeze page, sales page, review page etc. Examples include:

Internet Marketing WordPress Theme | WordPress For Internet Marketers

Optimise Press | Create Squeeze Pages That Convert Like Crazy

    • Well I might be the odd man out, but I use Flexibility 3 on all my sites and they seem to work well.
