multi language site

I have been looking into making my site show up in different languages and have seen many sites with flags of different countries so people can choose the language. I always thought the site must have been written so every page has a copy of the page in a different language but recently I discovered an article talking about language translators you can add to your site that shows the site in different languages by clicking on the language you want it in. Has anyone used this type of thing on there site. The article talked about google translate and a few others. Does anyone know how good these things are and if they are easy to add to a site. Thanks Mark

    Does the question refer to the quality of the translations or the technical aspect of setting up a 'flag' as a link to translations?

    The quality of any machine translation is sh*t. Always.

    Technically, they are easy to set up... although most of the time they are useless.

    OK, maybe I have to add a clarification:
    If I visit a site written in Japanese, for example, that I cannot read and have no idea what the site is about - then a machine translation helping me to figure out whether the site is about selling shoes or quantum mechanics... can be helpful. And that's all I can say about machine translations/translators.

    However, reading the translated text nobody will ever be able to figure out whether the author of the quantum mechanics site is the new Einstein or just somebody regurgitating old information.
