What sort of site are you wanting to create?

If you're looking to get content online then personally I'd suggest the Wordpress platform - free, easy to install, simple to customize and loads of plugins, themes and community support.

If you're looking to put up a sales letter or squeeze page then you'll need an HTML editor, a little know how and maybe a template to work from (until you get your head around it). Something like Nvu or Komposer is free, something like Dreamweaver is much more powerful but quite pricy... Horses for courses!

Perhaps if you can give us more information about what you want to achieve we can point you in the right direction!

To design just get an empty sheet of paper and sketch what you think you want. What goes where. Then get your graphics, photos and info prepared and start programming. (Make sure you've got it all together in one place on your disc.)

For a straight forward page/site, HTML is the answer. To edit it? Dreamweaver is really only needed when you want to build a 'special' site. I've got it but 9 times out of 10 I use Notepad. K.I.S.

Code it so you understand it later when you want to make changes. And do not forget the three 'T's .......Test - Test - Test!!!

      Good luck,

    Theoraga,

Creating your website is a simple and easy process, though as stated many times in the answers above, the method you will choose to create it largely depends on the goal(s) you have set for your website.

The quick and easy ways to do it:

    1. Go for FREE solutions
    > Blogger, the free blog engine of Google: www.blogger.com
    > WordPress, the most popular blog engine that can also be used as a CMS (which means that you have both static pages for your regular info and a "blog" page where you can add your latest news): WordPress.com — Get a Free Blog Here
    > Tumblr, micro-blogging solution, considered more "artsy" than the previous ones: https://www.tumblr.com/

The good news is that all of the above will get you started using a website with ZERO upfront fee and ZERO technical bits. Also, they are fairly secure solutions rather than throwing together quick HTML or PHP pages that could be exploited by the average hacker.

Once you get a hang of the basics (how to upload videos/photos, how to publish a post, how to add a comment, etc.) you can then start to dig further into the absolute basics for either installing your blog on a domain that you would have purchased or even creating the website of your dreams upon the solid foundation of a CMS.

Do not jump the gun! Give yourself the time to understand how it works before getting it to work. I believe following this order will make your learning curve more enjoyable.

    2. Learn from the pros!
A website I highly recommend to learn anything is: Software training online-tutorials for Adobe, Microsoft, Apple & more (not an affiliate link.) You can check out expert video classes for an extremely affordable monthly rate.

I wish you good luck in your webdesign journey!

    - Patty

+1 for using WordPress. You could even try using WordPress.COM instead of the .ORG just to get familiar with it and see if you'd like it. You'd be able to get a website up in less than a few minutes.

The simplest place to start is with a totally free blog on blogger.com Then try using Wordpress to advance.
Then finally for a serious business website of your own you need to hire a reputable Web Host company, setup a Hosting account with them, decide on a website Domain name, Register it with an ICANN Registrar ( preferribly unrelated to the Host ) and take their Privacy option, set the DNS ( Domain Name Servers ) at the registrar to your Host servers, create and publish your website pages, etc.

    1 Option

Buy a Domain, hire a hosting, design your site, and code it, upload it via FTP.

Get the domain in godaddy, design it in Photoshop, code it in notepad++, or dreamweaver, use filezilla to upload to your hosting.

Godaddy is easy to use , just choose your domain and buy it, buy a hosting plan in Hostgator, learn photoshop(it is not necessary, you can just put images and with some css you are done), learn html, ans css or Learn to use dreamweaver .

2-Option get Kompozer and learn to use it.

3-Option Go to wordpress dot com, and get your own free blog, just put the content in it.

Hey, the best help I've read here is the question..." What kind of website do you want to create?" Once you know that, you can decide the depth you have to head for. (simple, complex or somewhere in between). You could go for the Unstoppable Affiliate guy, he does walk you through it even if it takes a month or so, who cares.

Also, you need to decide on the niche (Unstoppable Affiliate is not so IM oriented)

    Hope that helps a bit^x^

It depends if you want to create a website or a blog, now blogs are much easier to get started with and also appear to be indexed quicker than a traditional website.

If you go the traditional website route you will most probably need to learn a little html. now if you search on Google you can find lots of free website templates and you might find one that seems acceptable, you can use that to start with, modifying it where necessary by editing the html to suit your needs.

I highly recommend Edit Plus as an html editor as it produces really clean code and is simple to use, do not bother use the the likes of Microsoft Word to build a website as there is a mass of redundant code.

Try to avoid spending money on website building software such as Dreamweaver, Frontpage, Microsoft Expression , they can be difficult to learn and complicate matters.

You need to keep things simple and if the website is for a business, spend a lot of time researching your keywords and content even before choosing a name for your site.

You MUST answer the question before you'll get an intelligent response, what is your goal?

If you're just looking to throw up a simple, practically useless website then use one of the freebie do it yourself hosting companies or pieces of software out there.

If you're looking to write articles, use Wordpress.com.

If you're looking to make money you're better off skipping the 'do it yourself' approach and hire an expert that has the experience necessary to help you compete.

There is a lot of great advice here ... but for very new beginners let me take a Step Back to clear up, before I offer my middle of the road answer.

Of course what you intend to have determines if you can just use a free blog or if you need a shopping cart etc etc. So the posts suggesting you be clear on what you are trying to do are certainly correct and you need to start by defining what you are trying to do, then picture what you expect your site to have or look like.

What I want to clear up are beginner's confusion due to English use of terms. Blogger (by Google) is a free blog, and similarily WordPress offers a free blog site BUT there is also free WordPress software for creating a website that you have to buy a domain + hosting for (this is called a Self Hosted Site, and is what some of us have dozens of, which we own). I am just saying there is a difference between WordPress .com and .org and above posts have referred to both (so like don't let yourself get that mixed up?).

You can do many things in a blog, and yes Blogger and WordPress Blog are free and they offer ease of use tools and services like they back up stuff.

More difficult to learn is how to set up your own website. You could learn on a place offering free websites (which might require some small ads), and that is how I learned HTML, but you are better off buying a domain name (that should not be too much $$, see GoDaddy mentioned above) and then buy hosting, which is slightly more per year or three, eg Hostgator). This gives the website you are designing and building a place to be on the internet (a name+ address + housing at the host).

Next I just want to clear up a little (old) confusion, the fact that WordPress, the free site building software that is downloaded and installed on your hosted site - this was first designed as a great Blogging easy to use helper/environment BUT has been expanded and these days there are add-on "plugins" that let WordPress sites do so much more than blogging, like nearly anything and everything. So I am saying WordPress is not just for blogs!! And many of the plugins are Free, and others cheap, and some very powerful indeed!

So I was just addressing confusion for the very new people reading here, and next is my comment on how I started.

Let me offer a "Middle of the Road" suggestion, which is how I got started using WordPress for my first few websites.

I let someone else "create my own website"! Yes I paid a little money, and sometimes that did or did not have the domain name +Hosting cost included. I have a few WordPress sites made by others. And you can find several places here where Warriors offer services. The idea is that I would see what they did and learn how to do it myself next time! AND when I get a site I have control, and I go and modify it and change things, and add posts and more and more. There is a lot to learn and I let someone else setup my first sites and so I can learn about WordPress by maintaining my own WordPress sites. There are many tutorials available for WordPress, search for free ones and then learn by trying.

Comments on others making your site. First (again) what do you want? Now here I wanted WordPress, but I did not have a clear idea about how important the Niche selection is, and we need a domain name soon, so to get one related to your niche requires we stop and think ahead!!

There are Warriors here that will build you sites for your niche type given the niche keyword(s) and your related domain name. And then some of them have experience with SEO and give you a good theme and do the Onsite SEO (should include plugins !). See this lets us study what others have found to work, before we try to do it all on our own.

What I mentioned in the last paragraph I know is available here on this forum, and I even got a email today saying they have a sale where one site can be built for under $50 (even less today on sale, which does NOT include domain+hosting!) and they will write a few new unique articles related to the niche, and post on your site. You add more posts, and you need to learn about backlinks and other Traffic methods.

What is also available are "Amazon" sites, which are also (or can be) WordPress but might come with items selected and articles. So this is similar but unlike a hobby topic, where there are ways to earn (like Adsense or clickbank), this is more exactly meant for Amazon and selling physical products. Again I have seen warriors who will setup your website and you add to it and maintain and get traffic (and hope to make $$).

Also available to purchase, and often included with How To Money Methods we buy, are website "templates". Usually they are specific for selling some product and ready to use. This is another side of the middle of the road, some work is done for you, but here they do not usually build a website, they have the content ready for you to upload to a website that you have bought the domain + hosting for, and you have to install WordPress (if the template is of that type), and then you have to upload the "template". They often forget to mention that you need to tell the search engines you are ready, and then you also need to do whatever is necessary to get traffic. Since the content was provided to you and most likely 100 or 1000 other people here is where I shall end saying be careful as Google likes original content (notice the websites I mentioned before were built with original articles posted). Please don't let me totally dismiss this idea of website templates, as a common example and good place to learn, consider becoming an Affiliate where the product owner provides a website template (often sales funnel) and sample emails and ads, plus many are serious about your success making both of you money and offer Great Free Training!

I am saying there is a lot to learn and I decided to take advantage of expereince others have to get a head start. I need to become an expert in using WordPress, and I started by using pre-build WordPress sites. I still need to learn about Niche and keyword selection, creating posts, SEO and backlinks. Then there are sources of royality free images and sounds, paid ads .... and so on. I expect to be continuing my education even after I retire

        Larry

I think it is important to decipher the main goal of your website and what you want to achieve. Through this you can build and develop a consistent theme that is relevant to your goal. Getting creative and furthering your skills as a designer is also paramount as to give your site an edge that other similar products may lack.

NO! Wordpress is a huge overkill when you only need a rather simple page and it is not unlikely that you will get your server hijacked sooner or later (mainly due to poorly coded plugins) if you dont keep up with all updates, fixes etc.

If you really need to build a huge website, where you need a framework, than consider using Joomla or Drupal.

I know a lot of members here like to use wordpress, because it seems so "easy" for them. But its just stupid to think that it is the best way to build a nice website.

So, back to topic: the OP is asking how to make a website.

The answer: Download a good text editor and code the site yourself. There are so many good books, websites, forums, tutorials etc. out there that will get you up in no time and knowing some html and css will also help you when you once need to use a cms system.

I always suggest that you get your own domain name and hosting from godaddy and then in the admin panel install wordpress. From there you can ad plugins that list your articles and posts into google etc automatically. There are thousand of free plugins etc that tutorials are available for free. You need to "promote you" , free web pages are great to add a place to add links back to your main page/s but you need to build your own presence which of course is your virtual store/ place to have families meet or whatever your are wanting to do with it. If you are going to promote internet products or real products to drop ship etc then word press works well. todaysentrepreneur dot info is a site to see the typical layout of a wordpress style blog which of course Google just loves to index quickly.Youtube had 1000's of video tutorials as well.

    good luck !

If you want to create a website, that is not blog, than wordpress is not the way to go. All people in here that are suggesting to use wordpress for a simple website, do so, because they have no clue what they are talking about.

Well you cant just go out there and search for a tutorial that will explain exactly what you want.

You must get started with the basics here:

        HTML Tutorial
        PHP Tutorial

Once you got a hang of it, you can create any site you want!

Have you used WordPress yourself since 2007?

The OP wants to create a site for him/herself, not start up a web design business.

While I definitely believe that a knowledge of basic HTML is extremely useful, I don't think the PHP is really necessary for the OP.

If someone said "How do I learn to drive a car" you wouldn't give them an instruction manual on how to build a car from scratch. You'd tell them to read up on the road rules, borrow someone's car, and get someone friendly and patient to teach them how to drive, then practice, practice and practice.

Actually I did. I don't see how this is relevant, but since you are going that route: did you ever not use Wordpress?

And to stick with your analogy: the OP wants to know what car he should buy. He mainly is going to use it to drive to the mall and his kids to school.

I tell him: get yourself a small car that will suit your needs, but first learn how to drive it.

You tell him: get yourself the biggest monster truck there is, start the engine and enjoy! Don't worry about not knowing how to drive it! Doesn't matter! (because Wordpress is in fact a huge overkill for someone who wants to create a simple website)

(you suggesting that I am trying to give an instruction manual on how to build a car from scratch would be true, if I said to the OP he should code his own CMS)

I really wonder: what makes you think that it is smart to use a tool, from which you don't know the basic technology and mechanics behind it? I hope you don't actually use that "logic" on other things in life or else I am sorry for your neighborhood (hint: the car analogy again).

Now, I wont start arguing with someone on a marketing forum whether using Wordpress is smart or not for building a website... (because I know how much you "marketers" like Wordpress - I would probably like it too, if i had no idea of web development)

I just hope the OP is smart enough to realize that I am right and you are wrong (nothing personal - so don't be offended!).

            Regards!

Yes, I did hand-code websites in HTML before I started using WordPress - years ago. Now I hand-code WordPress themes and basic plugins - but that's because that's my business now.

We just have different ideas of what constitutes the small car vs the monster truck.

I would say a complicated CMS like Joomla would be a monster truck, and so would learning to hand-code a website from scratch.

You say that WordPress is the monster truck.

Horses for courses - or trucks for tracks, in this case.

I would disagree about only using Wordpress if you want to do blogging and not for a website. There are a ton of really nice sites out there now that use pages within WP. For a beginner, I would definitely recommend going that route. Just start experimenting within a Wordpress.com free site and then look into routing a URL after that.

You got absolutely no idea if you really believe what you are saying and you are giving a horrible advice: you tell a beginner to use a huge framework, while he has no idea of the mechanisms behind it??

Well, I hope you will be around to help when he comes back crying about his site being slow as hell and getting hacked....

Here are the Seven Simple Steps I recommend to my clients and friends.

Step One: Write your content, till it's 70% 'right'. Don't worry about the other '30%'. You'll be continually improving it, and it will never reach 'perfect', so only aim for 70%.

Step Two: Create a free account at https://en.wordpress.com/signup/

Step Three: Tinker around with WordPress.com and see how it works.

Step Four: Copy and paste your web pages into WordPress.com as 'Pages' and your articles (optional) as 'Posts'.

    Post vs.Page — Support — WordPress.com

(You can actually combine the first four steps into one, by writing your content within WordPress.com. But you could get sidetracked by using a new 'program' to write in, so if that could possibly slow down your content-writing process, don't let it. But if you can handle it, the content editor in WordPress is just as easy, if not easier, to use as Word or other word processor programs.)

Step Five: Sign up with a hosting provider. Your options are:

    1. A normal hosting account

    2. A managed WordPress hosting account

A 'normal' hosting account should cost under $10 a month, and often include registering your domain name* in the package. You'll be responsible for keeping WordPress and any plugins you use up-to-date, and you'll be responsible for keeping backups of your site's files, and daily or weekly updated backups of the WordPress database (which contains all your content). This can be automated via a WP plugin, to make backups easier.

Also, you'll need to install WordPress (the WordPress.org 'self-hosted' version) yourself, or hire someone to do it for you.

A 'managed' hosting account means that WordPress comes already installed on your account. And you don't have to worry about upgrades/updates of WordPress or your plugins, or backups, because all that is handled automatically for you. It's great for anyone who isn't geeky. (Or even if you are geeky - I use a managed WP hosting account for my main site, as well as a normal account for other sites.)

You'll pay $20 and upwards a month for this service, and it's well worth the extra $.

Step Five: If it didn't come included with your hosting package, register your domain name. (That's your website address - like http://warriorforum.com or Google) Note - you don't own your domain name, it's more like you rent or hire it on an annual basis. If you forget to renew it, you can lose it if someone else snaps it up. That can be a major disaster.

    I use Namecheap.

Avoid GoDaddy - they seem very popular but a lot of that has to do with their affiliate scheme. I've worked with many different domain name companies on behalf of my clients, and I can tell you for sure that Namecheap is the best I've come across. GoDaddy is a real headache in comparison.

Step Six: Now you can export your content from WordPress.com to your new hosting account. (If you didn't go with a managed WP hosting account, you'll have to install WordPress first. If you chose a normal hosting account, it might have a simple set-up wizard called SimpleScripts you can use (I used to use Fantastico but I'm not fond of it anymore). If not, this may get complicated - talk to your hosting company's tech support. WP has a famous '5 minute install' but who really enjoys setting up a database? )

It's really easy to export your content from WordPress.com to your new WordPress installation on your hosting account.

Step Seven: Now that your content is on your own account, you can work on the design and extra features you want to add. The design is called a 'WordPress Theme'. You can find lots of free themes in the official WordPress Theme Directory (which have been checked that they're spam-free - don't get free themes anywhere else). But you get what you pay for - these aren't really suitable for a professional small business. (They suit hobby bloggers more.)

You can buy premium WP themes - some are great quality, others suck. Thesis, for instance, is marketed with lots of hype as being suitable for a newbie to create something fantastic with, but in reality it's more suited as a blank canvas for professional web designers to start with. (I'm not saying it completely sucks - just that I believe it's better as a framework for designers/developers, not so much for newbies.)

This is the point where it pays to invest some money in hiring someone who knows what they're doing to design you a proper theme - someone who knows the principles of professional web design, and how to add extra features to your site by installing the best plugins (some are great, some will slow your site right down and possibly lower your ranking in Google).

And if you've already got all your content in your WordPress site, you'll save a good chunk of money because your designer can work on the important stuff that only a designer can do, instead of spending lots of time putting your content in (which you've already done yourself).

*Note - you don't need to set up the WordPress.com site first and do the export/import thing - but I'm suggesting you do it this way because it's free, and it's low risk - if you decide you don't like it, you haven't spent a cent on WordPress.

If you know how to create a website, then great, you can create it and put it online. There are free web hosting sites on the internet. You can try it and test the effectiveness of your site or you can consult a professional to help you create your website.

Creating your own website is really a process that requires time, energy, some money and skill. But if you want to use the services of eBlogger.com and wordpress.com, then you can set up a blog in no time.

If you really want to create your own website but not a blog, then you either have to source for paid services from professional web designers around you (can also be obtained over the internet) or you can choose going the hard way of learning HTML language, the language used in designing websites. But be ready to spend some sleepless nights and long hours of sitting, learning and practising what you have learnt before you can finally develop your own website.

I chose to learn web designing so as to design my own websites and I actually advocate for it. There are many benefits when you acquire the skill. Every serious, passionate and enthusiastic person can learn it.

If you are planning to put up your contents then you can use WordPress. If you want to start your own website then you should have knowledge of HTML, CSS and few basic programming concepts. If you are good at designing then use this skill to its full extent so you wont require a designer.

How you would like to appear your site online. Your purpose of having a website. What kind of business if ever. How much would you like to invest with your project. These are just a few factors that might affect on how you would create your website.

If you have already learned the basic and would like to see what is like to have a website, try installing WAMP Server on your computer. I enjoy to test my projects using it. It's free to download. Though it has a built-in Wordpress, you can still start building a site from the basic HTML. It's really a great start. Later on you may decide to have your own domain or just place your content with free hosting.

    Good luck.
