I hope someone can help me. I was working on a clients website and used a plugin (core tweaks) and it/I erased the original generic post and made page that was to be my home page (url+page name). On that home page I at one point played with the permalinks : from url+page name to url+keyword then switched back.

I could not fix this (just as the plugin stated) So I had nav bar showing "home" (original generic post) but no content and then the page I created (url+page name). I 301 redirected the post to url+page name. Everything was fine except the nav button with og post was still there. I figured I would try to fix it later.

As I went back to the problem. I tried setting My url+page name as my static page and thats where everything went to crap. I now had a 404 error for the og generic post, looking for the permalink I created and changed (url+keyword)

I freaked and removed everything from the url (wordpress) and reinstalled hoping that would fix it. It didn't. I tried all kinds of different forms of redirects, even tried redirected plugins. Nothing. I tried added different variations of my url to google webmaster tools to see if I can find the 404 but I cant get pass the point of verification.

I am at my end, website was supposed to be done and I dont know what to do

CAN ANYONE HELP ME ?

Can you give a link AND the name of the plugin?

My guess is that the settings of the plugin are saved, even after you deleted it, and your URL structure is broken because of that.

Apparently I don't have privileges to send PMs yet.

Check your wp_options table to make sure that the home_url and site_url fields are set correctly.

For everyone readings this: This is why you create a backup before making any changes to a clients (or your own) site.

    Good luck with this.

you guys are correct. I am trying to learn and this is another learning experience. He did not have an existing site this was all new so nothing lost that way. BUT if you could add how to perform a backup for wordpress or point me in the right direction so when I do this next time I will do things right, I would appreciate it.

Actually, the correct rows in the wp_options table are
      site_url
      home

thank you everyone for your help, got it fixed. Had a 301 redirect that my host cleared...then had to clear my cache to view the new install of WP. Thats why I couldnt see my new install. Gonna make a backup like everyone said this time. Sometimes learning is painful.lol

    3 rules you should remember...

When working with redirects, always use 302 or 'temporary' until you're sure they're working correctly. Browsers have internal mechanisms that 'remember' 301 redirects so multiple requests don't have to be made. You may have gotten it right the second time around, but your browser won't know it because it didn't ask again.

Always always always make a backup before you start messing with stuff!!

Rule #1 - when you're designing or developing sites, do one of these:
    • turn off browser cache
    • clear your cache after every change
    • use version #s on your css/js file links to force reload
Browsers cache everything. If you don't force a page reload after making changes, you're never sure if you're seeing the new or the cached version.
