Ok guys so following the advice of other gracious warriors on here. I went to my cpanel and did a full backup backup and it it gave me a .tar file to save, so I currently have it on my desktop.

I still have questions and want to make sure I am doing things right so i don't run into trouble again.

Is the .tar file all I need to restore my website if there are problems later ?
I believe the instructions said I should be able to just upload it through the cpanel.

If my WP theme has a upgrade will I lose all my content/pics/links when I upgrade ?

I beleive my them has a child theme but I dont understand how I benefit from it or how to set it up.

I know many might say I suck because I am currently building a site for a dentist but I am inexperienced. I am probably the guy that you would say "doesn't know what he's doing" Im not trying to screw him though and I want to do this right as well as improve my skills. I also am not going to turn done $ because I am BROKE !

Your Help is appreciated

Yes, that should be enough to get started again if something goes wrong with your site.

No, you won't, but when upgrading anything on your site, whether it's a theme, a plugin, or wordpress itself ALWAYS backup your files right before upgrading. That way if something goes wrong during the upgrade process you can always start again from your latest version of the site.

Usually a childtheme only has the design part of your wordpress theme. When a theme upgrades, it's usually the mothertheme. That way any changes you make in the design (the childtheme) will not be overwritten when you upgrade.

    Hope this helps.

My understanding is that upgrading a theme can wipe out any customization done to the site. That's why child themes are setup so you can update the theme framework but not lose any customization because those elements are handled in the child theme which does not get updated.

you won't lose ur content for upgrading ur theme version, the only one chance u lose ur content when u upgrade your wordpress version since it will update your database structure.

theme only interact with your layout, mean you'll get messed layout after upgrade, or getting "reset to factory mode" of your theme layout.

No you won't loose content when you upgrade your theme. If you change your theme, then your content may be shifted around according to the theme. If you update wordpress, then there may be some issues on your site depending on the theme. It is always a good idea to backup your site before updating or upgrading.
