How Create See-thru Image?: PSD & Gimp

Hello,

When you take an image and change it so one can see through it, what is this process called? I have Photoshop, but barely know how to use it. I also use much more of Gimp.

I see more of these see-thru images in the background of some sites. How do I go about taking an image and change it so that it is more transparent? I'd appreciate help either by explaining using Photoshop or Gimp.

Thank you.

  • Although I am not a graphic guy (I am outsourcing it) that's the keyword: transparent/transparency...

Sometimes you can have the whole image with a 'tranparency' of XX% = "washed out effect" as I call it
or just the background of an image, so it will blend with the existing background of the site.
  • Something I'll throw into this convo is that you have to save the image as .png for it to be allow that effect. Jpeg, etc will be white.
  • It's not clear what you really want to do here. Do you want to apply such an effect (change the opacity settings) to the entire image, or do you want to make some part of the image fully transparent? If it's for the entire image, you can do it through CSS styles, which is the better option IMO.
  • [For Gimp]
if u want transparent area in ur image,

Go to layers --> transparency ---> Add Alpha layer

And now cut the required image and save it as

if u want to reduce the opacity..

IN layer dialog box u will option to adjust opacity, adjust it to ur need..

    save it as format..
