Why is it so hard to find an experienced wordpress developer/ designer?

I posted job recruitments at freelancer and guru. But .... It is waste of time.

I just want a professional blog with the following functions:

1. Membership Area
2. Squeeze Page (Opt-in Form)
3. Slider Shows
4. 3 Column
5. Affiliate Banners
6. Video Posts
7. Blog Posts
8. Paypal Gateway

I will need 3-5 blogs/ websites for different niches.

Kind Regards

Sam

@adsassist: You asked for help with the same site on this forum. In the very next thread, you promote that as a sample site for a web design firm.

@OP: I guess, you didn't look hard enough. You can find several developers on this site itself. You can also hire a web design agency if money is not an issue. You also have freelancing sites. If you want an experienced developer, be ready to pay accordingly.

        Bro,

I posted advertisement at freelancer and received lots of applications. After looking at their portfolios, I don't think they are suitable for me.

I want a professional looking blog like:

ANTHONY MORRISON AS SEEN ON TV
I Make Money Online By Telling People How I Make Money Online – John Chow dot Com

The sites the you cite as examples are not in the league of what can be called "extraordinary". Any one who knows the basics of WordPress should be able to build similar sites. I have built much more complicated sites for myself as well as my clients. You just need to look around and find the right person within your budget.

On WF, you can find developers who claim to build custom WP themes for damn cheap and then there are others who will charge you a lot more. To repeat the cliché: what you pay is what you get.

Decide your priority (money or quality) and find a guy with right experience and testimonials. Talk to him and see if he is the right person for you. Many of them will require you to pay a partial payment upfront and the rest on completion of work. It should work for you. All the best.

You don't need any one really experienced. These are all common features. Any intermediate level WordPress person can handle them all. I can build these in a couple days (ends up being a week by the time you go back and forth with site owner to confirm what they want).
If you got no response, you offered too low a price or put something in your ads that made people think you were confused and would be hard to deal with.

Membership area and paypal gateway are the most complex, but there's plugins (free and paid) that will handle those. The rest of the features are fairly straightforward. Most of the work will be getting it to look like you want it to.

It will take some time to get it done though. I recommend you budget for 60-80 hours of work. Find someone with 2-3 years of experience.

Lots of people quoted me around $500-600. But I browsed thru their portfolios, and found that most of the links were not working and some of the sites didn't look good.

I tried odesk but the WP developer didn't bother to ask about my requirements. They just kept asking me to award the job to them.

I am looking at long term cooperation on developing at least 50 sites by this year.

$500-600 is reasonable if the sites are all similar in nature. Once a system is developed it won't be difficult to duplicate. You might want to up the ante somewhat though, pay a bit more for the first site as an incentive. It can be a challenge to find good developers most of them are extremely busy.

The key thing when trying to hire a freelancer is stipulating your requirements exactly.

    EG:

How will the membership area function? Is it the same for all members, apart from some small personalizations, or will it be mostly unique, eg show their purchased items, a personalized action checklist etc.
Will their be a free and paid membership section, or just paid?
Are their different levels of membership?

How will the squeeze page work? Does it just sign them up to an email service? Give them basic membership? Ask for payment for premium? Offer all three? If all three, what will be the default, and whats an upsell/downsell?

How will paypal integrate? Just with the membership section, or with purchaseable items/downloads etc? Will it be on a per item or per month basis, or both? How about a prepaid topup basis?

Will all the sites work the same but have different designs? If so would you pay 50% of your budget for the 1st site (the most work by far)and 50% for the remaining 4?

Now if you where to approach a decent agency, they would ask all these questions, but at $500 you arent likely to get that, so you HAVE to do it all you self.
Also, do you know much about programing yourself?

I ask because if you do, you can learn just as much about a pottensial programmer from how they answer you questions than from their portfolio.
Ask them specifically how they would approach an aspect of what i detailed above - eg would they create products as a custom post type, and link them to user ids for displaying purchased items, or would it be better to create a new database table?
If they cant give a timely and well argued answer (either way, thats not the important part) then they arent any good.

    Hope this helps

VERY low-priced. With an experienced professional developer, that would barely get you out of the planning stages.

As someone else suggested, though, if your other anticipated sites are basically the same, it wouldn't cost nearly as much for additional sites - just the amount necessary for the changes.

You want the site designed and developed with that functionality? $500-$600 is probably pretty low to mid-range in that you can get foreigners on Odesk or what-not to do a decent job for that price.

If you were a company approaching another brick-and-mortar design and dev company for this type of work, you would be billed over 40 hours and it would cost more than $100/hour imo.

All you need is the right theme and some GIMP to make any site look like that.

I'd say theme is 90% of the work. If you can code then Thesis is the one.

I also use Catalyst in many of my sites.

If you are looking for a sales page/product launch page/membership site then definitely consider Profits Theme. It has them all and also options like an optin box, sales funnel, etc.

For large scale duplication I use WP Twin to clone the sites and make minor changes to header and colors.

My recommendation is to invest in the theme and then hire guys at Fiverr to code the theme according to your satisfaction. Like someone and you can hire for more regular work at $100/200 (for the entire site).

Take your time to write few paragraphs about theme functionality in specific details. Go out of your way to cooperate and be easy to get in touch with and respond quickly. It can save you a lot of money.

Consider dividing the work and getting different people to work on different tasks ie. one good designer, html/css coder and php coder. After that hire a good all-rounder to base other sites on your first one and you should be good. Other themes should cost less but first one would probably cost you more.

Smartphone compatibility is something that is usually done by the theme, not a plugin. You should expect to be charged extra for this because you need someone that knows what they are doing and has proper testing tools.

        Hello Samsharen,

I am not saying you cannot LEARN a new language, but the thing I meant is your focus. You are firstly looking for a designer and developer ( both are different ), and then you change your mind and think of being a designer and developer both.

I have been coding wordpress themes and plugins since 5 years now, and I know how much i struggled to reach this far. html, css and php coding is not a piece of cake that you decide to eat today and its in your stomach in the next 5 minutes. It takes a lot of time, knowledge and experience to reach a stage where you can code in your sleep also.

And as everyone is suggesting above, post your project on freelancer or Odesk, MAKE SURE you specify in the project that this job involves both design as well as development ! Look for the bids, talk to them, look at their ratings and feedbacks by previous employers. If you feel they are ok, select them and wait for results. Make sure you ask the designer to show you a rough mockup within 1-2 days only so that he doesn't waste your time.

        Good Luck,
        Patrick.

          Hey Pat,

I'll agree. I built my first website when I was 16 with geocities! I'm 27 now, so 11 years? Also went for design and was certified in publication design nearly 4 years ago. Learned WP shortly after that.

HTML is my strong point. I hate php lol. But I will fix it if there is no other option or person to do it for me! CSS... that is taking some time, but I feel I should outsource those things also, or leave them for the people who use dreamweaver....

kind of the gen. before WP.

I don't know dreamweaver... or how to really build sites in photoshop. I kind of merged somewhere along the lines of doing content in graphics, focusing on headers, and let some other person worry about the ebook creation covers.

I didn't start making a living on it though until about 7 months ago, and business has flourished b/c of oDESK.

It is also a great place to find affordable designers, as they help the global economy.

or even on fiverr.com you can get WP help for super cheap.

HTML is my strong point. I hate php lol. But I will fix it if there is no other option or person to do it for me! CSS... that is taking some time, but I feel I should outsource those things also, or leave them for the people who use dreamweaver....

Hello, Well if you hear my story you will be like how the hell is he coding now. I started myself as a dumba$$ who didnt know anything about coding. I went to college but never studied, but still managed to get a degree . It was roughly 5 years back when I had interest in rentacoder and freelancer.com and got a few decent data entry and link building kinda jobs from there, mostly through rentacoder, which is vWorker now.

Slowly I started to get a hang of things and I started to learn new things as time went by. I stayed up nights and till today I work all night, and I am a little amazed myself to see me like this today. I never thought I would reach this far, where I would know Wordpress, HTML, PHP (thought I am not an expert in it, but can still do a bit of it), CSS, Jquery.

And similar to you, Odesk gave me a BIG boost, when I joined Odesk I won bids around 100 bucks but now I dont get any bid less than 300-400, that too all sent through invite after looking at my profile : )

So all you guys out there, whatever you are good at, spend some time on things that INTEREST you and not see what people are doing to make money, give time to it and a little patience, you will grow up bigger and better than you can ever think of !

            Patrick..

    Sam -

Let me begin by saying I understand your frustrations...really...I do. I am a full-time wordpress frontend developer(ie I don't code custom plugins, but do everything else). I also freelance on the side when I am not at my 9-5.

I understand you are not having luck on elance and other freelance sites. I get that completely. Many people on those sites are working from home and do not have the proper work ethic to complete projects they start. Or they simply bid on every project that comes their way and they are not qualified to complete it to your satisfaction fully. That ends up leaving you with half done projects and frustrated...I get it. Even as a worpdress developer I sub things out when I am too busy to do it myself, but I always work with the same dependable people. I don't use freelance job sites.

That being said I have to comment on your budget. Having a members area alone will eat up double of what your budget currently is. I don't fully know the requirements that you are looking for, but I think user Carrot, hit the nail on the head about the unknowns of a membership area. These can easily cost $1000 - $1500 to create alone.

I realize you have several sites you want created, but $500-600 is a bit low of an expectation to get unique sites built. In my experience even those who claim to have a template that they "simple want tweaked" ends up cost $800 - $900 because of the potential complexity of modifying another developers code. I have a framework I build all of my sites off of, but if you were to look at it installed before anything was coded it would just be a bunch of unformatted divs and text. It truly is a barebones framework, but the magic comes in with how quick I can get the site into wordpress.

You mentioned smartphone compatible. I believe what you actually are referring to is responsive design - see mediaqueri.es (note that is .es not .com)for several examples. This adds yet another large cost to the equation. The company I work for charges an additonal $3000 for a responsive worpdress design. There is a lot of extra time that goes into both the design and coding to make a worpdress look right on an iphone, ipad, kindle fire and a desktop.

Doing all of this from scratch yourself is probably not the answer. I have been coding websites since 1996 and I can assure you its not something you pick up in a week or two. Sure the basics of html or css can be learned "quickly" but you have to ask yourself, is spending hundreds of hours of your time learning html, css, graphic design, php, wordpress, etc...a good use of your time. Is it productive and more importantly is it profitable. I would surmise that if I needed to have my broken leg fixed that I would be better off going to a doctor than learning how to fix it myself (ok, probably a bit extreme, but you get my point).

Let me bring this all back into prospective...if you have several sites you want to have coded, I suggest you begin by looking to pay about $1300 -$1500 for the first site...then if the other sites are essentially the same feature set with minor tweaks to the design, you negotiate a lower cost for the extra sites...maybe $700 a piece. I am confident you will get a better response with those rates.

p.s. The site you mentioned in your initial post is not what I would consider to be a glamorous or flash website which is difficult to create. That theme is pretty basic in its functionality.

Take a look at sites like ThemeForest.net and WooThemes. You can get some great themes that you can just customize with your content. Generally they cost about $35 each, but it will take some time to build it out.

There are free plugins for membership sites. Just Google something like "Best Free Wordpress Membership Plugins" and you will come across a few good ones. The nice thing about Wordpress plugins is that they are so easy to change. If you don't like the way one functions or isn't documented that well just "deactivate" it.

I've used two similar Wordpress frameworks for the sites that you liked. Check out Thesis theme for the John Chow site and check out Profits theme for As Seen on TV one. I have to say that Profits theme is very easy to use if you are just starting out. Thesis is pretty easy as well, but is set more for "customizing".

I have to say that being a designer myself is that your price point of $600 - $800 is a bit low. If someone were to approach me locally for a site like the one you are looking for I would probably quote at $3000. I know that there are many who would do it for less, but if you were to ask around at your local web design companies they would probably be quoting you much higher.

99designs is a good site to find freelancers. Stay away from Craiglist if you can. Hope that I was able to give you some insight. Check out those two themes I mentioned.

It is not difficult to find an experienced wordpress developer/ designer. The main problem is this that a few people joins this field and after sometime they got a valuable position in organization and after that they transfer their work load to their juniors.

Thank you very much for your advice. Actually I found some good developers, but they are not good in graphic designs.

I have been around WordPress for over 8 [yes, eight!] years now. Rarely (read: almost never) seen a real good developer that had the faintest idea about graphic design. And, on the other hand, all the graphic designers - here on the forum and everywhere else in the world - suck big time when it comes about coding.

The two jobs require totally different skill set, different way of thinking... different "brain" (read about the differences of the right and left brain hemispheres).

If I was a betting person I'd bet you'll find none.

There are a lots of talented people that can do both. I have seen that in Singapore and Australia. Just that their charges are much higher.

It is not actually hard to find it, you can outsource in the Philippines since they have a lot of great experienced wordpress developers. Also, it is cheaper than the others..

If you are willing to pay about $800-$1200, depending on exactly how you want it done, I can get you in touch with the guy who does my more complicated sites. He is American and as good as they come. I doubt he would do it for less than that though.

    Hi fellow warriors,

I have encountered another problem here.

How do I deliver my info product after customer makes payment via PAYPAL. And how do I "limit" the number of downloads? Otherwise the customer will share the link and download the info product for free.

An that, actually, has NOTHING to do with web design.
Learn how to search. It has been asked at least once per week... and answered in details as many times - so, do your homework.
