I need help with E-commerce Website with Member Login

I need to know if I can use Wordpress or osCommerce for an e-commerce website that has a members login. The website will be used for selling accessories wholesale to various boutiques. I don't want the general public to be able to purchase the items at the wholesale prices, or even see the wholesale prices. I also don't want to have to deal with the sales tax issues, so I will be requiring their reseller license numbers.

Because of budget constraints I would like to use osCommerce(free) or Wordpress(Elegant themes) with some type of membership plugin for this e-commerce website.

Also, need some sort of automatic username, password generator, I guess?


Your help and suggestions are extremely appreciated.

    I built a site using Magento that only revealed product price and checkout buttons to logged in users. You can make an additional field in the registration process gather the reseller licence number.

    Just use some simple php if statements to check if the user is logged in, and if they are show what you want.

      I keep hearing about Magento as a really good e-commerce solution; however, I also hear that it takes up a lot of space, and has a steep learning curve. Even so, I beginning to think that I should invest some time in learning how to use it. I'm just a little afraid of it right now.:confused:

    You can use WordPress along with a membership plugin (S2Member) and an e-commerce plugin. You can then require registration (which can be controlled by you) to see the prices and any other protected content.

    Check out DigitalAccessPass.com (DAP) when you get a chance. It has a built-in cart - so you don't need to buy a separate cart plugin if you're using Paypal, Paypal Pro or Authorize.net.

    And you can put the buy buttons on protected pages, so that only members can buy your other products.

    And it works with WordPress, and thus all WP themes - free and paid.

    Restricting price/purchase details to logged in users is simple enough in most systems with simple if statements.

    Really, you need to map out what main features you need, eg payment gateways, bulk discount/minimum purchase restrictions etc.

    This sounds like a low volume, high purchase type of site, so wordpress would be able to handel this easily.

    As far as membership is concerned, it sounds like you would want to approve them manually anyway, so would take very little work.

    Magento is a really strong ecommerce platform, easily the best out their (in my biased opinion). This is because they offer a enterprise version, which runs on the same code, that large multinational companies such as North Face run on - and us normals are allowed to use the community version.

    Building a site using magento provides your clients with a clean backend interface that is 100% professional.Having said that, yes magento is a resource hog so your server will need to be decent (ie: wouldn't recommend in a shared environment). The learning curve is rather steep i guess, but this is because magento is a one stop ecommerce solution that covers everything required from inventory to invoicing.

    As an ecommerce developer I would highly recommend you learn the ins and outs of magneto. Also knowing some good php will allow you to manipulate magento, or any other eccomerce platform, to work how you want.

    i'm adding finishing touches to my latest store/site, it's powered by OpenCart and i've made a matching WP theme to act as a seemless addition to the store that contains coupon codes, news, twitter feed guides etc...

    I can't recommened OpenCart highly enough, really did take me by surprise after using silly programs such as OsC and ZenCart.

    ZenCart is a very easy cart to setup, however I am partial to using Joomla with Virtumart shopping cart which is much more involved with many more ways to configure things.
