    The advantages are Magento is now being the leading ecommerce all in one solution. So templates development will be highly profitable. The development is somewhat harder so there are still few developers.

    What System Wide said was true. Magento was created with E-commerce in mind and is veru sophisticated to be able to handle ecommerce shops of any size. I would recommend for simpler projects, to go with an easier solution.

    Magento is probably too advanced for a basic user. Testing it on localhost is a huge pain.

    I would recommend something like simplecart or opencart for beginners instead.

    I was a magento developer for a Eco Amazon Alternative that had over 5,000 enviromentally friendly products.

    It took 8 months to develop and was a huge pain in the neck.

    -Magento was coded by russsians and the majority of the documentations are still in russsian. English documentation is poor.
    -Magento developers are EXPENSIVE since they are far and few in between.
    -Magento has SOOOO many little tweeks and things that, if it is your first time, you'll screw up and it'll take you a week to debug. Think of Linux in 1997, yea it was THAT non-user friendly.

    Other than that, once it is develop, its amazing to use.

    I used magento pro. that was a great experience to monitor and control the inventory, categories, orders and other marketing stuff. It allows the admin to create its own functions through admin section.
    I only saw such functionality in bigcommerce non hosted version "interspire" but it is costly one.
