If you're using a custom install of WP which I'm assuming you are, you can write HTML in sidebar text boxes.
      1. Go to create a new post and upload the image as if you were inserting it into the post, but just copy the image's URL on your website and close that.
      2. Paste this code into a sidebar text box and replace the "smiley.gif" with the image of the image you wish to embed and you're done "<img src="smiley.gif" alt="Smiley face" height="42" width="42" />

EDIT: I thought you said "Sidebar" at first before I read your post again. This sound like a theme specific issue and you'll just need to Google this one.

    Wrong title.
    Sliders are NOT WordPress-specific issues...

Yes sliders are most often a feature of the theme. Eg I use the Clickbump theme a lot and it has built in sliders. Your site overall looks ok.

Personally I'd consider installing WAMP on your local machine and set Word press working locally then just play with it, the smashing magazine books are excellent imo its a pretty friendly system to work with
