I am completely new at this and finally took action today, I got my domain with namecheap and signed up for hosting with host gator. I followed the instructions exactly to install WordPress with the quick install tool, I got the login name and password but when I go to Mydomain.com/wp-admin I get a problem loading page screen. I installed it to the root and I'm not sure what else to do. I'm using Firefox as a browser if that makes a difference. Any ideas?

    "root" meaning exactly what?

    It should be the folder named "public_html" - if you did not upload the WP files there... it won't work.

    Try reinstalling it. Also, make sure that you set DNS on Namecheap to point to your new Hostgator hosting account.

    @Istvan when you use the quick install tool it tells you to leave the box blank to install WP on the root domain vs. installing in a subdirectory. He's not manually installing WP.

    @Rich,
    I always assume that everybody is installing it manually
    (is there any other way?)

      Why are you against using install scripts? I know some of them make the administrator 'admin' but it's pretty easy to add a new user with administrative rights and then delete that user or change their rights to 'subscriber'. Fantastico seems to do everything that a manual install will?

        Because I like to be in control and hate to let scripts to mess with my sites

        Furthermore, it is a good "initiating" school to learn how to use a freaking FTP client... we would have way less idiotic questions around here if people would have learned from the first day how to download > edit > upload a template file via FTP - as opposed to f*** up their WP installation by messing with the online editor.

        So, yes I am very much for learning the basic of the internet and web sites... if someone wants to earn money using this thing called the web.

    Like RichKent said check your nameservers on the hosting account. The files are there but if the DNS from the domain name isn't pointing to the server then you won't be able to find the site. Get the nameservers from your host then add to namecheap by going to domains/manage domains/select domain/then domain name server setup and add them there. Give it about 15 min or so, could be a bit longer, then all should be good.

    So here's the deal. If you can't get your site to display by domain than your domain isn't pointing to hostgator .

    To confirm this use your temporary url to view your site. Find it on the left hand side of your cPanel. The address will be ~ cPanel login (or something to that effect).

    Also in your cPanel is the ns1 and ns2 server addresses. Find these and login to your namecheap account. Look for a place to enter in these addresses and save your changes. If you are having trouble finding the ns1 and ns2 addresses just call Hostgator and ask them what they are. Keep in mind that this may not take effect instantly.

    Good Luck
