Simple way to take down WP site temporarily

Can anyone tell me the simplest way to "take down" a WP site temporarily?

Some plugin or addon that you can activate and deactivate that will restore the site to it's exact former state will be ideal.

      Open notepad, paste text above, save as index.html

      Upload to public_html
      Make sure if you do this that you have backed up or renamed your current index.html file. Personally I prefer the other method suggested which is just to install an under construction theme that way when you are ready to bring the site back up you just switch themes.
