This is how I started my design business.

At first I run a blog about WordPress and blogging. I posted some really good articles and tutorials about WordPress so then people started asking me to help them design their WordPress websites. This is how I got my first clients.

Once you get your first clients treat them very well and give the best service because they will spread the word of mouth. This will attract more clients. You can also try freelance sites like Odesk.com, Freelancer.com, Elance.com, Guru.com etc. Once you have some good designs in your portfolio you will find it much easier to get new clients.

  • Firstly you need to have somewhere to show off your portfolio... Customers need to see that you can produce good quality work that they would like to purchase for themselves.

If you are serious about designing websites for income, your best bet is the local market in your area. However, if you are going to truly service your clients, Freelance Web Design is far more that creating a nice looking site. It requires an understanding of the local economy, integrating with facebook, local seo, and more.

The local small business community is starving for web designers who go beyond a pretty site, but provide a balance of quality design, user interactivity, local seo, and ties the business to the social networks...

Trends are like horses... best ridden in the direction they are going...

The trend today is a solid website integrated with social networks. In any community there are hundreds of businesses whose websites are still back in the dark ages... their owners are looking for the right guy or gal to walk through their door offering a solution.

I recommend going door to door, shake the hand of the business owner, and present them a viable solution. It works... I know because that is how I sell my sites... face to face!

You need to learn the languages inside out before you take on clients, otherwise problems will leave you with egg on your face. I would keep practicing and build some of your own sites to learn everything properly. Once you feel ready, create your own portfolio site to show off the best of your talents and then go out hustling. Post up your skills on oDesk, Elance and even on here until you get some clients. Put their sites in your portfolio and if you are any good, it will be like a snowball with more and more people using you. Make sure you come up with a good name and put a link at the bottom of every site you build back to your site to get more customers. Best of luck

There`s a lot of job outsourcing site out there for freelancers but before that, you must be aware of these things:

These are the things that a web designer should always consider in choosing or doing a great website design.
    1. First page takes it all - most of the bounce rate are caused by chaotic Home page or the first page of your website. I, as a regular visitor, I dont want to spend my time understanding what your design is all about. As long as I can understand it. We`re on the same side.
    2. Left to right, Top to bottom policy - You should always keep in mind that we are taught by our teachers to read from left to right and top to bottom. Same as reading or following a website flow. It should be from left to right and top to bottom.
    3. Keep it short but not to short - Everyone is looking for informative content but make it look interesting and not boring.
4.Use appropriate colors- I once visit a site. and darn! it gives me a headache looking at its color combination and I promise to myself I will never visit that site again. Every web designer should create a site that is attractive but not too colorful and not too pale.
5.Keep updated and Check your grammar - It is self-explanatory so no need for further explanations

Web design is a very broad category and it is pretty impossible to be an expert at all of it.

I would decide exactly what your focus would be and find out if there is a local market for it.

Learn the basics HTML5, CSS3, Photoshop, etc.

    Learn proper design

Please no tiny fonts, white text on black backgrounds, light grey text on a white background or any other light pastel text on a light colored background. The customer has to actually be able to see and read what is on the site. Make sure the pages load fast. If the home page is filled with useless goo gahs that take the page 10 seconds or more to load, you have lost the customer.
Design for the customer's customers, not for the client to show his friends what a cool attractive website he has but it looks terrible and nobody uses it.

    Good luck
