Hi all, long time reader first post thanks to everyone for the amazing information on this forum.
I have a free hosted blog with my own domain name that I'm redesigning and planing to move to a self hosted CMS and was wondering whats the best practice for moving without getting deindexed by google, preserving backlinks to my site and what to do with visitors to the site during the moving posses?

Moving form tumblr to selfhosted wordpress.

Would like to get a heads up on what to expect when moving.

  Hey UMS thanks alot very usefully information, A new question I have after reading the artical and watching the video is it said the content should be in the same place when moving. but when I transfer over from tumblr to word press all the domain will be the same urls to my content will be different.
  
  Will this have a negative affect? or will google just reindex all of my content and it will be fine?

In that case, you should try to map the old URL to the best match new URL, eg:

oldsite.com/page.html --> newsite.com/newpagename

If there are some pages that don't fit in with the new site, then redirect them to the home page.

I've used this technique when I've converted old static HTML sites to WordPress.
